I've Had So Many Loves Before, In Very Many Ways
by Laura

1. If he said he loved me, I'd be lost

A couple of days after their trip to 1941, Toshiko comes into his office. Jack can see she wants to ask him something, and lets her put it together in her mind, first, before prompting her. “Toshiko?”

“Jack,” she says, taking a seat, then a breath. “How old were you, when you first kissed another man?”

“Are you still picturing the Captain and me in your dreams, Toshiko Sato?” Jack teases, a hint of a grin on his face.

“So are you, Jack,” she replies, more serious than he was.

“Yeah,” he says, after a while, nodding.

“Jack Harkness, stop avoiding the question,” Toshiko then tells him.

“Okay, okay! My first kiss with another guy was with my best friend, Max, when we were both fifteen.”

It was summer, they were lying on a blanket on the beach, as their sun beat hotly down, and a breeze blew. They were both still clothed; the Boeshane Peninsula’s climate didn’t really allow for sunbathing. He just turned to Max, his jet black hair, and his dark eyes; their lips found each others.

They kissed every day of that summer; the encounters were initially soft and gentle, but soon became heated. Then so heated that they had go inside, where they could be naked, and they went to Max’s.

Jack’s never forgiven himself for Max being tortured to death, when he was only seventeen, and they were soldiers.

On a roll, and needing to push that memory to that back of his mind, Jack continues, “I was eighteen, when I kissed a girl for the first time. She was blonde, her name was Marica and she was twenty. It was in a bar on a space cruiser.”

Hot and heavy straight away, too. He took her back to his room, where they were naked and on the bed within a few minutes. They kissed, licked, nipped, rubbed, stroked, had sex.

All good memories, but Jack’s thoughts go back to the man whose name he took. “He was good, y’know. That would have been one of the very few times he got what his heart desired, Toshiko.”

“Then I’m really glad it was with you, Jack,” she says, quietly.

“So am I, Toshiko. So am I,” he whispers back.

2. I want him so, I love him so

In the seventy-fifth go-round of the two-week time-loop the pair of them were inexplicably stuck in, the man who would in his future be known as John Hart left the pub he’d been drinking in, with a companion in tow, and went home to his Time Agency partner, who would one day go by Jack Harkness.

“Honey, I’m home,” he said, closing the door, in a fake accent, which kind of resembled his partner’s. “And I brought a male friend with me.”

“Is he hot?” his partner replied, from the lounge.

“Very. I think you should see him for yourself.”

That was all the other man needed. He soon began stalking towards them, eyes bright. “Oh, you’re hot as hell, gorgeous,” he addressed the alien, who was green, with feathers all over on his arms. “Good choice, darlin’,” he told his partner, cupping his face in his hands, pulling him in close, for a kiss.

“Thought you’d like him, love,” he said with a grin, when he was released.

“Oh, I do!” His partner was then treated to the same action by the green-skinned alien. When he was released, he looked dazed. “Man, and I thought we were good.”

“We are, love, we are. Now, can we please take the nice-looking alien to bed with us?”

“You got it, darlin’.”

3. So calm, so cool, no lover's fool

They’re in a bar, on a space station, after a shopping trip for TARDIS parts. Rose is with him, Jack’s over in a darkened corner. Talking to a cobra-headed, four-eyed, reptilian, fur-covered alien. Judging by their body language, it’s so much more than talking that Jack wants to do.

Sure enough, the Captain then goes and kisses and embraces the being. There are the expected number of arms, but a tail slowly circles around Jack’s waist, as well.

And Rose gasps.

The Doctor looks down at her. Rose’s eyes are wide, and it looks like she really doesn’t understand. “Don’t tell me you’re surprised, Rose Tyler? Fifty-first century guy; told you he was flexible.”

“Yeah, but, you didn’t tell me he was that flexible. He didn’t, either.”

She sounds confused, maybe even betrayed. Jack’s got some explaining to do. “I’ll have a word,” he promises. Jack’s gonna be doing even more than kissing, it now looks like. “C’mon, let’s go back to the TARDIS. The Captain’s a big boy, Rose. He can look after himself, and he’ll be back, later.”

“Yeah,” Rose replies, distractedly, depositing her empty glass on a table. She slips her hand into his and they leave.

The morning after his little sexual adventure with Kelismeran the Cobthonian, his soft fur and his fabulously muscular tail, Rose is kinda cold. At the breakfast table, she won’t even let him kiss her good morning, on the forehead. And they always do that.

“What did I do, Doc?” Jack asks, as the two of them install the new parts. “Rose isn’t talking to me, at all.”

“She saw you kissing your new, and not even vaguely humanoid, friend, Captain,” the Doctor explains, resting the sonic on the console. “Rose was surprised enough when you went off to do your distractin’, but this was somethin’ completely different.”

“And she didn’t understand?”

“Jack. She might often be smart, and I might have shown her a lot, but Rose Tyler is still nineteen, an Earth human, and she was born three thousand years before you. What do you think?”

“Guess I gotta talk to her, then?” Jack asks.

“Yep.”

“You gonna help me?”

“Nope,” the Doctor replies, a huge, manic grin on his face. “You’re on your own with this one, Captain.”

“Gee, thanks, Doc,” Jack says, rolling his eyes.

Rose is lounging in her room, when there’s a knock at the door.

“Rose. It’s Jack, sweetheart. Can I come in?”

Sighing, she clambers off her bed, and opens the door. “Jack,” she greets him, and it’s all still a bit awkward.

“Rose.” He wanders in and she closes the door behind him. He looks down, briefly, then back up at her, half-smiling. “Guess I freaked you out a little, last night, huh?” Jack carefully asks.

“Yeah,” she admits. “Didn’t know you were that flexible, when it came to dancing, Captain. Might’ve been nice if you’d told me, y’know.”

“Maybe.” He pauses. “Okay if I tell you now, Rose?”

“Yeah, Jack.” Rose climbs back on her bed. “You can come up here, with me.”

“Okay,” he agrees, joining her. They sit cross-legged, facing each other. “How am I gonna explain this?” Jack mutters; Rose can see he’s thinking. “Right,” he says, shortly. “Rose, your century has different ideas to mine about love, attraction and sex. Your society says it’s alright for you to like boys, or girls, or maybe both. Mine says it’s okay for me to like boys and girls-”

“-and furry lizards?” Rose cuts him off.

“Yeah. And any other kind of alien that catches my eye.”

“Including a Time Lord?” she teases him.

“Definitely including a Time Lord, and a twenty-first century human girl!” he happily exclaims, grinning. But he turns serious again, saying, “Rose, I’ve been falling in love with anyone I like the look of for twenty years, linear. Humans, and not even vaguely humanoid aliens. In the fifty-first century, it just doesn’t matter anymore; there’re no labels or categories. If someone’s hot, they’re hot, even if they’re from another planet. You understand, now?”

“Yeah, I think so,” Rose replies, happier than she was. Then she pounces. “C’mon, then! Tell me ‘bout the first time you slept with a not even vaguely humanoid alien, Jack.”

“You sure, Rose?”

“Yeah, Jack,” she says, yet again, nodding.

“Okay, sweetheart.” He leans in; she accepts the kiss on her forehead. Jack moves back, then speaks: “She was another creature with a tail, it was in the sea, and I was about twenty…”

4. I've been changed, yes really changed

It’s what passes for night on the TARDIS. Jack’s just about to drift off to sleep, when the hum that’s usually at the back of his mind, and gentle, is all of a sudden at the front, instead.

And not quite so gentle.

Now awake, he asks the ship, “What’s up, beautiful? Something wrong with the Doc?” No, try again: “I’m talking, here, aren’t I? C’mon, Jack, telepathically,” he reminds himself. Closing his eyes again, he repeats the questions, so she can understand them.

In reply, he receives lights, colours, sounds, all spiralling around inside his head. The biggest smile on his lips, Jack laughs. Beautiful, are you trying to seduce me? ‘Cause it’s sure as hell workin’!

The ship indicates that, yes, that’s exactly what she’s doing, so Jack places one hand on the wall, and strokes, just like he did the first night aboard. His other hand goes between his legs. There are brighter lights and colours, louder sounds. Jack doesn’t know quite how long it all lasts, but he ends up being very seduced indeed.

The TARDIS’ hum turns soft, once more. With it at the back of his mind, again, Jack drifts happily off to sleep.

5. I never thought I'd come to this

‘Alien meat’, Jack had said, grinning widely. But he’d left it there, and convinced that this wasn’t one of his very tall tales, Gwen wanted more. She gave him nearly a week, then strode into his office one night, after everyone else had left. Gwen took the seat opposite his desk and said, straight off, without even waiting for him to acknowledge her, “Tell me more about the sex you’ve had with aliens, Jack Harkness.”

“Gwen Cooper! I’m shocked!” he replied, looking up at her. He was sporting the same huge grin he had worn before. “I’d love to tell you more.”

“And will you?”

“Oh, yeah!”

“C’mon, then,” she said, smiling at him. “What’s it like?”

“Different, every time, just like with humans, or humanoids. My first time was wonderful, thankfully. It was me who was propositioned, can you believe it? My partner was blue, telepathic and a sea creature. She had the most amazing tail…”

***

It’s a week after their little chat that Jack presents her with a delivery from the Rift. New, old, he doesn’t say.

“So you can experience some different sex for yourself, Gwen Cooper,” he tells her, displaying the contents of the box he’s holding.

The…toy’s rather like a long, flattened cone, and looks very flexible. “Thank you, Jack,” she says, a bit stunned.

“You’re welcome. Be sure to report back to me, when you’ve tried it!”

Leaving her with the black box, Jack stalks back to his office, hands in pockets. Gwen’s still stunned, but she laughs, nervously, before getting on with the report she’s trying to write.

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends
I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all
