Scar Tissue
by Laura

It was so cold, the winter of early 2010, that they’d lived at 221B Baker Street for six weeks before Sherlock finally saw the scar on John’s shoulder.

Two weeks after they’d met, John had dispensed with locking the bathroom door, unless he was using the toilet or the shower/bath. He’d decided that just letting Sherlock come in and deal with whatever experiment had taken up residence in the bath, while he was shaving, was infinitely preferable to having him pick the lock for the umpteenth time.

Now, in mid-March, here they were: John, bare-chested while he shaved, and Sherlock bursting in on him. Their eyes met in the mirror; John watched him trace the spider’s web of pink and white scar tissue on his left shoulder, so stark against the rest of his skin.

“More than just campaign medals,” Sherlock said, eventually. “Much more.”

“Yes. I was an officer, remember.” John swallowed, set his jaw, stood a little straighter. “But according to your brother, ‘bravery is by far the kindest word for stupidity.’”

It was clear from their expressions how very little they both thought of this particular pronouncement from Mycroft.

Sherlock then set his own jaw, and stood a little taller. “I think you’ll find, John Watson, that bravery is by far the kindest, and best word for bravery.”
