SV - Fiction - The Last Message from Krypton

This has been languishing on our hard drive since the start of Season *2*, so long before Rosetta or Shattered/Asylum aired. I pulled it up a couple of days ago, and discovered that I'd actually written about 1400 words, and it was pretty good. After some positive comments on the drabbles and slightly longer stories I wrote, I've given it a polish up, but otherwise it's un-beta'ed.

The Last Message From Krypton

On the day after the storm, Lex had nearly completely recovered from his injuries *already*. As she’d promised, Chloe had been mad at Clark for abandoning her at the prom, and because of that, Pete had been mad at him.

“You don’t do that, man!” he’d said.

Clark had replied, “Do you think I don’t know that, Pete? Did you want me to let Lana die?”

“’Course not, Clark!”

“Exactly. Chloe’ll forgive me eventually. I hope.”

And so she had, and within hours they were all friends again. With Lex, Chloe and Pete's help, his dad had been found and like Lana, was recovering in hospital.

Mother Nature/Fate/Destiny/God had thankfully decided that Nixon wasn’t worthy of staying alive.

That same day, his mom had told Clark about the spaceship and the other events. Martha had said that the ship had come alive, changed shape, hovered and lit up. It had then started to open up. She had been so scared of what might be inside that she had dashed over to the ship and tried, unsuccessfully, to pull the octagonal disk back out. Fortunately, the lights in the ship had then flickered and gone out, and the ship had landed. It was as if the ship had known that its precious cargo wasn’t there and had decided to switch off again to conserve energy.

Clark visited the ship every day. He tried unsuccessfully to re-activate the ship for years.

The summer before his last year at Metropolis School of Journalism, Clark was back in Smallville, visiting his parents. One night, when he was in bed, and nearly asleep, he suddenly felt a strange sensation, that could only be the ship calling to him.

Within seconds, Clark was out of the house and in the storm cellar. After all these years, it looked like the ship was coming alive again. ‘Guess it must have decided it’s time to tell me whatever it has to tell me, and that’s why it’s finally sensed me.’ Having lit up, the ship was now opening. Clark walked over to it and peered inside. The ship had a very small chamber. It contained a bright blue futuristic looking cross between a bed and a chair and what appeared to be a computer. There was a hand shaped space amongst all the flashing lights. ‘Do I put my hand in here, then?’ thought Clark. ‘It looks like it would fit...Let’s give it a go!’ Clark placed his hand over the space. He was about to lower it into the space when the ship’s computer apparently sensed it was there, pulled it in, and held it in place. “Ow!” screamed Clark, feeling pain for the first time in years.

The computer started, and Clark heard three words; Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El. ‘Jor-El? Lara? Kal-El? What do they mean? Are they names?’ he thought.

The computer’s holographic display confronted Clark with images; beautiful green skyscrapers, a red sun, a man addressing a meeting, a couple working in a lab, the lab being affected by tremors, a small child being placed in the ship, the ship being blasted off and the couple embracing for clearly one last time.

'Guess I must have a inbuilt Universal Translator,' thought Clark. 'Well, at least it didn't make a fish appear out of thin air, and tell me to put it in my ear!'

A female voice said, "We will be with you, Kal-El, all the days of you life. You, our planet’s last son, may display this final message from Krypton to your guardians and closest companions."

With that, the words and pictures came to an end. Not all of the message could have been recorded, so Clark assumed the ship’s computer must have extracted some of it from his mind. Kal-El was his Kryptonian name. This couple had been his biological parents. Clark felt sad that he did not consciously remember anything before landing on Earth and finding the Kents.

Clark pulled his hand out of the ship, and shook it to get some life back into it. He walked away from it, and it calmed down and eventually closed up and switched off. He closed and bolted the storm cellar door, and ran back to the house.

Back in his bed, he tossed and turned, thoughts running though his mind...‘Clark Kent, adopted Kansas farmboy son of Jonathan and Martha Kent. Gifted humanoid alien. Crucified savior and protector of Smallville. Smart but socially awkward young man still with very few friends, one of whom is the bald rich guy up in the castle. An indefinable relationship with said bald rich guy. Kal-El, son of Jor-El and Lara, sole survivor of the once great planet Krypton… God, how many more identities am I going to get? Schizophrenia, here I come. Hey, Lex, can you give me the name of the most trustworthy shrink you know, 'cause I think I'm gonna need one.'

Clark eventually managed to get back to sleep. He had to speak to his parents in the morning.

Clark had taken his parents down to the storm cellar to show them the message. First, he had to describe what they were going to see. He took a deep breath and began.

"I'm the only one who survived the destruction of a whole planet, Krypton. My birth parents, Jor-El and Lara, built a ship in secret so they could send me off into space and hope that I would survive the planned journey to Earth, where I would not look out of place. Jor-El had warned the Science Council that Krypton was becoming unstable; its core was changing. They just wouldn’t listen, and then it was too late. The planet suffered quakes, exploded and all 5 billion of them lost their lives. The ship dragged the fragments of the destroyed planet with it to Earth. The fragments caused the mutations; made Lex lose his hair."

The ship had now sensed Clark, and was opening. Clark pressed his hand into the activation space and the message started. Unlike last time, the ship did not hold his hand in place. As the message played, he could see his parents seemed to be frightened of what they were seeing.

"Do you guys trust me?" Clark asked.

"Of course we do, Clark...we just get scared sometimes, " Martha admitted.

When the message got to the part where Jor-El and Lara first appeared, Clark attempted to pause it by just thinking it about it. He was so surprised that it actually worked. "Mom, Dad, I'm scared nearly *all* the time. I'm strong, fast, and indestructible; I can fly and set things on fire with my eyes. But look at them, they look just like you two, just like any other humans. I'm probably not going to turn into anything more strange than I already am. They created me, but you're the ones I know and love."

As the message ended, Jonathan and Martha were very wary of the “closest companions” part, and just who Clark considered members of that group. Clark silenced them with, “Lex once told me he'd do anything to protect his friends. I trust him. He’s getting to see this, along with Chloe and Pete."

That evening, Clark was up in the barn loft with his friends. Chloe and Pete were also back for the summer, and Lex had taken the LexCorp helicopter to Smallville after work. Clark had taken a leap of faith and admitted his origins and secrets, confirming his friends' suspicions about many occurrences. They discussed the message. Clark then took them to the storm cellar and the ship, to show them the message.

The alien technology amazed Lex, Chloe and Pete. When the message was done, they fired so many questions all at once at Clark, that his head hurt.

“Guys! Quiet! Please!” he said. That worked instantly. “Now, one at a time.”

The questions resumed, and Clark answered them the best he could. After a few seconds silence, Lex spoke, apparently for the three of them.

“Clark, you have my solemn promise that I will never tell anyone about this, and will protect you and your secrets for as long as I live.”

And with that, Clark hugged Lex, Chloe and Pete in turn, sealing the promise.
