Like You'd Understand Anyway by Jim Shepard. His earlier short story collection, Love and Hydrogen is one of my favs. I saw him read at a bar a few years ago and was hooked.

Fodor's Croatia and Slovenia. In preparation for a trip I'm taking there in April.

Imagined London by Anna Quindlen. An great concept executed in a rather dull way. ( Read more... )

You know, I'm not sure? I think he's a photographer and a writer, but I don't know much about him. The book is a compilation of photos and interviews from a fashion/art/photography magazine he runs called aRude. You know me. I love the pretty pictures.

Much of Maxfield Parrish's work seems to be naievely,but coyly, sensuous: perfect for Italian Villas.

Jim Shepard's stories are certainly well-crafted, well-written, but I feel such a distance. They don't draw me in like, for instance, the short stories of Lorrie Moore do.

I really dug the Shepard book you sent me, but I think I understand what you mean. There's a Salinger flavor in his writing, like there's a lot happening off-screen.
