Wimbledon: Ladies' final

I quite enjoyed watching the Ladies Final; there was some great tennis being played out there today. My enjoyment was slightly marred by the fact that I was able to guess the result. I watched the first half of the match live, then I went dancing; when I left Venus and Serena were 6 all in the first set and they'd been playing for 44 minutes. ( Read more... )

I wasn't going to bother watching this, as Williams Sisters = Boring as Shit, but SO's sis was here and wanted to watch it, so I ended up seeing most of it.

I actually subscribe to the They Decide Ahead Whose Turn It Is theory, and IMHO, Venus was playing like crap (when she's sizzled throughout the rest of the championship). She was muffing returns, muffing her serve and she looked rather unhappy throughout the match. Yeah, there were some good shots/rallies, but as a match I wasn't impressed.

Roll on the men's this arvo! Go FedEx!

I started to have some doubts in the last couple of games, but before that, I really felt like they were both going for it and that it was a genuine competition. For the first set, they both played well and consistently, and for the first half of the second; it was only later on in the second that Venus played poorly enough for me to stop thinking "unlucky shot" and start thining "wait a minute, she's creamed everyone else she's played this championship, what's going on here?". And then that last set was fantastic and so I wondered if maybe I'd been making up stories where none existed.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if they decided something like "whoever takes the first set wins the match"; they had a doubles match later in the day so a two-set final would be preferable to three.
