Oh god. That was just... incredible.
The chemistry that Benedict and Martin have is electric and this episode really made the most of it; there were so many beautiful little moments between Sherlock and John that had me laughing out loud. But what I loved most was John's unswerving, unfailing loyalty. That deeply-held belief that Sherlock is brilliant and honourable and good. Even after hearing from Sherlock's lips that he was a fraud, even if it was over the phone rather than face-to-face, he refused to believe it.
That scene by the grave was incredible. Martin did a fantastic job; a man fumbling in the dark of his emotions to try and figure out what's there. How to take that twisted mess and give it voice. Desperately trying to cope with the loss of something he didn't know how to quantify except by the gap that it's left.
And the fact that Sherlock was there watching, that says so very much. You get the impression that he's following John everywhere, following all of them - the friends he "sacrificed himself" for, but especially John. Making sure he's okay, not going to do anything stupid, not in any danger still. And that's he's amazed by the grief that he's seeing; that he doesn't understand how John can still be so loyal, so trusting in his goodness after all that has happened, like it's a puzzle to figure out - he has to keep watching to get more clues.
It's going to be a long wait until the next series.... I'll just be watching this one over and over again until then if anyone needs me.
