That's a good question. Thankfully it's one I haven't had to answer, yet. I've come close a few times, though.
Being happy is paramount, but taking a step backwards professionally isn't good, either. If you're both happy *and* challenged at the new position, I'd say go for it. Of the holy triumvirate (happiness, challenge, reward), you need to be able to say you're getting 2 out of 3 to take a hit on the other, IMHO.
Thing is, I think it's a professional step up, even though it's a financial step down. As I told mom last night, I don't think I can find a job that pays what I'm making now in this area in the clerical/admin field. They're out there, certainly, but the competition is fierce and I'm often shouldered out of the running before I have a chance to show myself off.
I do think happiness + challenge will happen with the new position. With bonuses and profit sharing, reward MAY eventually show up, and I'm trying to keep in mind that at 6 months, I'd be eligible for a raise.
It's simply a matter of math right now. With bills and the new house, my personal budget (but not the family budget, per se) is tight. Taking a hit on my personal income will hurt a LOT, and will result in me not paying off my debt as quickly as I'd planned (and GOD I hate dealing with interest fees). The reward will be a gamble, so it all is in their court right now. My fingerses is crossed.
