The job I was hoping for still hasn't gotten in touch with me. In true A.M. style, I have determined that I'll not get the job, so I've stopped hoping for it. Now, I'm just mildly annoyed that they've taken so long to tell me "No."
However..
The IRS contacted me by email yesterday to let me know that a position I applied for last month is a position that I am actually qualified for, so they're going to consider me as a candidate. This is good, considering every other US Government job I've applied to in the past few months either doesn't get back to me at all, or tells me that so many veterans have applied for the position, they've not even considered my qualifications. Consider my fingers crossed on this one.
I've applied for 2 permanent positions, now, at the place I'm currently working at. These would be positions that involve getting hired directly instead of working as a temporary/contract employee. The one I applied for today came about because TWO of my supervisors pointed it out to me as a possibility (they look out for me, what can I say?). I took this as a sign and prepared and sent off my application packet about an hour ago.
A.M. now has a shiny white pickup that he is thoroughly happy with (he was practically bouncing yesterday), and today decided to accept the job offer that was given to him as well. It will involve a cut in pay that isn't insignificant, but it's a cut that we, as a household, can handle as long as we're careful with our finances. I stressed this to him repeatedly when he called to see if we could live on what they're offering him: We will need to micromanage our finances. What this means, in the end, is that I think we're eventually going to need a joint account so neither of us are just spending money here and there. Every purchase will be a debate, including food items. This will be stressful, I think, because he doesn't like thinking about money. Because of this, I will suggest that I handle it from now on for all of our bills -- how we'll be able to handle things like gifts and other surprise purchases is beyond me, though. Do any of you have experience with that?
This also means that I'm going to have to start getting used to the idea that I can't just spend money whenever, and the biggest culprit is going to be food. I will need to pack lunches, eat breakfast and - for the most part - leave my debit and credit cards in a safe place at home instead of carrying them around with me. I'm also going to have to find out where the nearest discount grocery stores are (Bi-Low, Sav-A-Lot, etc.), because WalMart is just NOT as cheap as they want to make themselves out to be when it comes to fresh meats, dairy, and produce. I'm considering renewing my newspaper subscription for the coupons, but I've learned that the newspaper doesn't typically offer coupons that I'd actually use.
Mom sent a package to me for my birthday with some nice swag inside. A handmade thick brass cuff bracelet, a pair of wrought iron sconces, a set of King egyptian cotton sheets in a lovely champagne color, and a check for A.M. & I to splurge on this weekend. Considering my desk hasn't been the same since the move and we are both itching for a better shower, I'm thinking of taking that check and buying a new computer desk and one of those big silver rain shower heads. She told us to buy a rug with the money.. but we can live without a WalMart rug for a while. :)
