Mukashi mukashi. Once, he had not loved her.

Fierce though he had always been (protection - loss too young and guilt too raw do not allow for trust), it was her openness and absolute loyalty that reminded him that gentle did not always mean weak.

Elegant though he was (indignity for one so graceful to be cast as the ungainly knight in this melodrama), it was her dancing that exemplified for him the art form - a duck's dance for true, flat-footed, unbalanced - and he knew he could never express himself so purely.

Lonely though he would be (he who had once loomed and stalked alone now wished to recompense all that misguided time), the dance of a duck held more temptation than the kiss of a woman, for in it he saw that a duck could be a girl and a girl could love - even an ungainly knight.

Writing on the lake, waiting in the sun, he sought the plot to bring back his only-ever happy ending.

Just a short Fakir character study, but it wouldn’t let me sleep until I’d written it. Hopefully I’ll start writing in this fandom now, because I love this pairing and it’s very rare.

I’ve cross-posted to my adults-only journal, which I keep separate from this one. So please let me know before you do anything if you think someone’s plagiarized it, it may actually just be me.
