As winter draws in the conversation again turns towards annual events. Well OK, last year we had a DVD weekend and watched the three Lord of the Rings films on Alan / Tamsins (sans LJ) large screen home cinema system. We would like to try and do this again but are drawing blanks as to a theme which would interest as many of the group as possible ( ( Read more... )

I'm not sure whether it's entirely up Alan and Tamsin's street, but how about 80s/90s fantasy movies? You know the stuff; some very painful/baaad and some entertaining.

Ladyhawk, The Princess Bride (probably THE best), Hawk the Slayer, Conan, Red Sonya, Legend, Willlow, etc. For yawn value there's always D&D The Movie!!!! Before anyone gets upset, I'm almost certain that not all of these are 80s/90s, they just feel like it!

Or...

Again not sure about the univeral appeal, but if you're looking for a theme, Gangster/Mob/Mafia movies. The scope is endless - I won't even start to list them.

The old classics sound good - decent films but none of us have seen them recently

you know theyve made 4 series of 24 now! that should keep you going for a while! maybe you should sod the fact that you cant all agree on what to watch and take it in turns to decide the theme. or maybe you could all put what you want to watch in a hat and chose that way. or you could have a French eve, then an Italian eve, then a German eve etc contrary to popular belief people other than Americans can make films.......... well the french can anyway.

I have managed to keep up with 24 but I know every one else is upto a different series. Also 24 hour of TV (OK 18 then) may be a bit much.

I did suggest we all bring two DVDs of choise and then watch them at random (still my favourite idea) but I got the impression that people expected too wide a variety. Or maybe a couple of them did not trust that we could pick films we would all like.

Not sure I have ever seen any German or Italian films but I hav seen my share of good French ones.
