I am with you on the whole questions about vaccinations thing. We never gave Aidan the MMR, chicken pox, or flu ones. We waiver on the MMR, but I will never give him the other two. Even now as I look back, I think I would be WAY more hesitant to vaccinate him. Isn't it crazy to think of how many shots they get at such a young age? Everyone I know is pro-vaccine so I really don't have anyone to talk to about it. The way I feel is that if I am uneasy about anything, I will not do it. It will not hurt to wait a bit or, at the very least, space them out a bit more. Now that Aidan is older, I really see that *I* am the parent and I do not have to do something just because the doctor wants me to. Such a simple thought, but when he was a baby I was such a first-timer and scared of everything. Okay, I hope I didn't babble on too much! :D
I am glad to hear you had a nice bday--you deserve it!
Well, not a mom, but I do deal with pediatricians on a daily basis in my job and we chatted about this when it was in the paper a few weeks ago. Two of my docs (both moms) swore they'd never seen a good enough reason not to give a child the MMR, but both of them passed on both chicken pox and flu. One flat-out said that the flu shot has a bigger chance of being useless every year than it does of actually combatting the strains that go around. Even though, as hospital employees, we are all required to get it.
Happy belated birthday, by the way. Hope it was a nice one!
Is the MMR vaccine the one Jenny McCarthy et al are up in arms about relating to autism? Might it have caused C's autism? I don't know. C has been vaccinated for everything (except Hep C or B). As a mother, I just wanted to keep him as well as possible. Who knew there might have been a potentially life-changing disorder in one of the vaccines!
I always had a bottle (or pacifier) ready each time C was vaccinated. And he got extra tight cuddling. Vaccines are difficult on all parties involved (minus the nurses).
Prevnar - that's what I meant to mention. It's only effective up until age 2, so depending on the risks for your area, that one may not be as necessary to you.
