Since this has kept me up for the past hour and a half while I should have been sleeping, I thought I'd throw it out here for the masses to ponder.

You're probably right about the job, at least. Guys are really stuck with the long hair = lazy stereotype, among others.

The haircuts I like on guys all require regular attention from a barber. However, you could go for one of the medium-long cuts from this page. (Sorry, couldn't find anything non-celebrity.) They seem to go well with short facial hair. If you get them cut a little short to begin with, you can go longer between trims.

Do you know what your hair does when it's medium-length? Does it curl or anything awkward?

Unfortunately, it does all kinds of awkward. Not curly, but very wavy and different parts of my head have different ideas about which direction my hair should hang. It was a bloody pain when I was growing it out in the first place until it got down to somewhere between my jaw and shoulders.

Go places? Convincing myself to go much of anywhere these days requires a greater act of willpower than it really should. Hiding in my room with my intarwebz is so much less risky, even if the benefit is similarly small. And I'm really not so sure that I have this confidence of which you speak. (Also, see edit to OP)
