British colonialism was for the most part about exploiting the colonized for resources and labours so that the mother country would reap all the benefits. The idea of nation building was a tierd excuse used by old colonialists attempting to justify the immoral act of imperialism-we weren't preparing them for independence we were just dragging them along for the financial sake of the home country ( ... )

I'm not an apologist for imperialism, but I believe India's current boom is greatly facilitated by the institutions that British rule put into place. India stagnated for 40 years following independence maibnly because of a misguided and unsuccessful socialist doctrine.

And by the way, the Brits had nothing on the Belgians in Africa. The Congo was Leopold III's personal fief and he enslaved the entire country, with extensive use of torture. The Brits at least had decent governance, rule of law, and some (albeit not total) respect for human life.

A lot of what you're saying is true. Although I'd like to make it clear that I'm hardly an apologist for imperialism. I specifially stated that because of the nature of the Indian population technology and education could go ignored by the English. And the result was 700 million or so serfs.

The point that i'd like to make clear is that looking at pre-imperialist India and post-imperialist India, English dominance may have put some problems in stasis and aggitated other, but it DID introduce a sense of nationhood (if through it's abuses) in India and create an enourmous amount of insrastucture and the groundwork for independant government.

It's as easy to call the English imperialists satan as it to give Islam or American the same name.

Have you been able to view the Conservatives' shameless attack ads? They've been out for about a week. They seem like a commercial that would air on FOX during a US election and seem very unCanadian. Basically the conservatives attack the previous liberal governments (Chreatian and Martin) on their environmental record or lack there of and because Dione was the environmental minister he is now taking the wrap. It is implied that Dione would be a weak leader and has no clear progressive plan regarding gas emissions and the environment in general. Not once in the ad is it made clear what action Harper would take or what his government would do differently.

Best part of it though is today a letter came out that Harper sent out to members of the Alliance 5 years ago when he was their leader. In it he says that Kyoto is a "socilaist scheme" and to paraphrase: designed to suck the money out of rich countries.

Muhahahahahahhaha Majority Liberal rule, I think so.

Canada has been just as un-Canadian since Harper was elected as America has been un-American since Bush was the same. If you google "George Bush, Steven Harper" the first title that pops up is "Steven Harper is Canada's George Bush" so recent FOXier attack commercials made by the conservatives do not surprise me in the least.
