Here are the best books I read in 2010 (some came out before):

OUTSTANDING:

  • The Price of Spring, by Daniel Abraham
The final book in "The Long Price Quartet" fantasy series, which began with A Shadow in Summer. I liked, but did not love, the first book in the series -- I thought the world was really intriguing, but I didn't really bond ( Read more... )

Thanks for this--I pulled several onto my to-read list.

I love Alastair Reynolds--just finished the excellent NESFA collection of his short stories, Deep Navigation and highly recommend it. If you're interested in recommendations about his other work, let me know.

Glad to provide recs! I'd love to hear more about Reynolds. I generally prefer novels to short stories, but I'll keep Deep Navigation in mind. As for his novels, he's got so many that I wasn't sure where to start -- further recs would be great.

Most people get into him through Revelation Space and its sequels. They're very good, but very hard SF and very dark--occasionally veering toward horror. It's the same world as The Prefect, but even darker and more twisted corners of it. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, I would go with either Century Rain or The House of Suns, both of which are slightly gentler on the reader. Pushing Ice has good characters, but reminds me of Clark or Bear in terms of being driven by physics rather than plot.

Do you read Iain Banks? Or Ken MacLeod?

Thanks -- that's all great to know!

I haven't yet read anything by Iain Banks except a couple short stories which didn't grab me, but I have The Player of Games on my book pile. I've never even heard of Ken MacLeod!
