aw gee thanks kp. coming from you, you fancy writer you, i take that as quite a compliment!
btw, there's some free theater going down at ucla on saturday the 9th at 3pm at ucla and i think caitlin and i are going. it should be a good time. it's a series of plays based on stories by the japanese author yukio mishima in a modern take on noh theater? at least that's what i gather from the poster. anyways. it's a low key non full production, but i'm obviously interested for the above verbose reasons. ha.
i think i have a friend coming up from san diego that weekend that i haven't seen in at LEAST four years. so probably no, unless she's not coming. but i guess if it's free i can let you know closer to the date? the show sounds awesome, though, and like something i want to see...
i was thinking about you the other day! i think it had something to do with i was reading a martha stewart magazine and i missed our cooking experiments..
If you're ignorant, it's okay to get away with braids that aren't period and typecasting. It really is pretty hypocritical that we Americans pride ourselves on being so diverse, when really we care very little about other countries (in my experience).
I'd fight it. I don't care if I'm not half-anything. I'm a mutt, but I still have a voice.
I definitely agree. It's definitely not the same as your situation, but when people hear I study/studied Japanese, some of them would come out with some really horrible stuff, ranging from not knowing the difference between China and Japan to incredibly offensive and racist jokes (not to mention assuming I'm a cosplaying otaku only into Japan because of some weird sexual fetish
( ... )
grrr i get so annoyed with people who assume anyone who's interested in japan is obsessed with anime/manga.. ><
i also find it interesting that there are practically no big name asian american actors or actresses.. most of the big names are actors that are from japan or china (jackie chan, ken watanabe, zhang ziyi, chow yun fat) and then the few asian american ones that are out there (lucy liu, sandra oh, kal penn) end up in some of the most ridiculous shit. (did someone say harold and kumar?)
this is a great post; and i haven't read the comments above mine so forgive me if this has been said, but if for any reason you become "that asian designer that does asian things", you should definitely use this post to exhibit your findings and throw away those rumors. hell, perhaps your honesty about this entire ordeal could help you win that scholarship.
i know nothing about fashion or china (or.. well, really any damn thing if it isn't directly relating to the internet) but this was so well written i was extremely captivated by it and now i want to learn more :D
