These things happen in cycles

My family has a new generation today - my cousin Adam and his wife had their first child, Analyss. (I think that makes me a cousin once removed? Second cousin?) I haven't been around for much of the process, but I'm sooooo happy for them :o)

On the other hand, another nutcase decided to open fire at a college today too ( Read more... )

The children of your first cousins are your first cousin's, once removed. So your mom's cousin is ALSO your first cousin once removed. Second cousins are when the parents of both people are first cousins, so your mom or dad's first cousins are YOUR second cousins.
I hate consanguinity - it's so complicated to understand. The only reason I know about it is because when I went to visit my VERY distant-family in Belgium, I had to explain this shit to people - I met my THIRD cousins, which means that my grandparent (paternal grandmother) is the first cousin of THEIR grandparent. Follow? haha, I barely do myself.

Anyway, congrats! Yay!

NOT yay to nutcases...yikes

Edit ~ 2nd cousins are your PARENT'S first cousin's children. That's what I meant to say haha.

I'm sorry about your great grandmother... but at least she lived to see great grandmotherhood. not a commonly achieved feat!
And congratulations on your newborn cousin once-removed. (Yes, it's once-removed. I looked up all the obscure relations once when I wanted to know what kind of cousins all of my cousins really were.)
