When Karma gives you a well deserved kick in the mitka. Again.

You would have thought I'd learned my lesson the last time something happened to my documents(they were encrypted by pirates) and my backup system was defunct. I lost a lot of chapters on two stories. So, being properly chastised, I set up a new hard drive for backups, and also started emailing myself the latest copy of what I was working on ( Read more... )

Oh lord. This is what I have nightmares about. Many hugs or other appropriate comforting activity.

I deserve a kick in the pants, not a hug. This is my own fault for not being more careful. Although I'm looking askance at Open Office now. It's been crashing on me a lot, but it saves the work. This was weird how it cut out just that chapter. There's notes I have past that missing chapter and it didn't delete them.

so I wrote out the summary and as much as I could easily recall, now for the rewrite.

Thanks for the commiseration. Make sure your backup is working, because, I did not see either time when I lost stuff coming.

And I suppose system restore, going back a day, won't work? (Not that I know how to use system restore, but hey , almost everyone is more computer savvy than I am!)

I went and checked but alas. System restore works for programs, restoring an earlier version of them. It doesn't touch your documents, music, or photos. To restore those files, you are directed to your backup. And since mine was out of date it didn't contain that missing chapter.

Thanks for the idea, though.

Oh noes!

Don't kick yourself too hard - it can happen to anyone. If the systems were more reliable we wouldn't have to back things up all over the place and fifty times a fortnight.

Much sympathy and hugs and kind thoughts.

And Open Office crashed again as I was doing some editing after I read your comment. No, this is my fault, I should have been better prepared.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Yep. Cute icon, though.

Thanks, Patt. Nah, this is my fault and I'm owning up to it.

I'm so sorry. It's especially annoying for you because you're blaming yourself. Most of us don't get caught out like this, even when we don't update for ages.

I hope Open Office stops crashing on you. That can't help either. :o(

Open Office crashed at least a dozen times this morning, when I was trying to do some editing. It's behaved tonight, at least.

Let's hope I learned my lesson this time. I did email myself the latest version that I'm working on.

Thanks,

Laurie
