"...You know Voldemort's snake, Neville? He's got a huge snake...Calls it Nagini..."

"I've heard, yeah...What about it?"

"It's got to be killed. Ron and Hermione know that, but just in case they-" The awfulness of that possibility smothered him for a moment, made it impossible to keep talking. But he pulled himself together again: This was crucial, he must be like Dumbledore, keep a cool head, make sure there were backups, others to carry on. Dumbledore had died knowing that three people still knew about the Horcruxes; now Neville would take Harry's place: There would still be three in the secret. "Just in case they're - busy - and you get the chance-"

"Kill the snake?"

"Kill the snake."

Okay, I know this might seem like an odd choice. I know this is more of a passage than a quote, and there were so many wonderful quotes, particularly R/Hr related ones, that I could have chosen. But I decided to go for something a little less, shall we way "obvious" because this moment really struck me when I was reading DH. They've all been through so much already by this point, we've just witnessed the fact of Colin Creevy's death, and Harry's about to embark on that long, long walk into the dark...and there's just something so potent about this moment. In an odd way, it kind of mirrors that moment in Sorcerer's Stone when Neville catches the Trio leaving the tower and stands up to them - he becomes a fourth partner to their secret, in a sense. And here too, what Harry's telling him, and asking him to do, brings Neville in as a fourth cohort in the plan, this time in a very different way.

Also, there's so much that is unspoken and yet so clear in these few words - Harry's knowledge of his impending death, Neville's subtle suspicions about what Harry was going to go do (and I think, his subtle understanding despite Harry's evasiveness), the way that they both recognize what must be done, the parallels Harry draws between himself and Dumbledore as he realizes what must happen, and, too the painful implication that Ron and Hermione might not be there to take care of Nagini either. There are many links between Neville and Harry throughout the series - the proximity of their birthdays, the persecution of their parents, growing up without (or essentially without) said parents - and this moment crystallizes all this and links them inextricably together.

Puts a lump in my throat every time.
