I've been watching the reruns of his cable show for weeks now and I still can't figure that out.

Vincent's fate is entwined in the balance of this town and he knows it, even if you do not.

That is why he returned.

He was pledged to The Order at a very young age, and when he took his sacred vows he knew this meant he would need to see whatever transpire through to its end- and his own.

His present reluctance aside, he will be there at the end of all things- even if we do not lift a finger to capture him, he will be drawn to us regardless.
