wot? spike jonze didn't test well with kids, you say? wot? test audiences tend to be lobotomized puppies, you say?
but also, if you dig into the comments, on commenter asserts the original cut stands, another comment says there were some problems with the kid's voice breaking in the middle of the shoot and some AD not signing off on some fine FX shots.
what i find cute is that it's cross-marketed so that we both found it from our own little internet niches.
The thing about this is...its just magnificent! There IS a creepy/haunting/spooky quality to ALL true fairy/ kids tales, that's what made/makes them so poignant. And there's no time better than childhood to be introduced to them. Like Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, or Puff the Magic Dragon's melancholic assertion that he would never see you EVER again, or in the book Bridge to Terabithia where the childhood best friend drowns, or Pooh and Christopher Robin...those are the stories you remember 4eva! The way the big giant asks to be hit, its so, I don't know, sweet.
Anyway, sometimes adults need children stories more than children do. I triple love it.
and funny thing about kids anyway, they're both unpredictable and adaptable. so A) something may or may not scare the shit out of them (hell, i thought mr. spock was satan when i was 4), and B) with caring adult filters, they can watch most things PG or under.
and yes, fairy tales wouldn't be very interesting minus real elements of danger and loss.
that said, and even with some foreshadowy-looking scenes of the end of childhood (him seeing what appears to be his mom on a date), many other scenes seem to really capture the essence of play. yep, very excited.
