Susan finds them at the pub. It’s not an unusual sight, but her heart always skips a beat when she sees him there, sitting at the bar. She trusts him implicitly, but she’s educated herself enough to know the statistics, to know that falling off the wagon happens more than it doesn’t.
There’s a plan for every potential slip up, every bump in the road that could possibly tempt him, that could find him lost again. Every plan has a back up plan, every idea a million contingencies. Sometimes she feels guilty, like she’s waiting for him to fail, but she’d rather doubt him than risk losing him.
She’s the type of person who wants to be prepared. She hadn’t been prepared for Robert. Her entire life is getting used to him, being ready for whatever he throws at her only for him to shock her once again. It’s giddy and thrilling and she loves it; she loves him. But there’s one surprise she never wants, so she waits. Just in case.
He looks up from his seltzer, as if he’s physically drawn to her across the room. She smiles affectionately at him as he grins, moving through the crowds of people as he get off his stool. His arms wrap around her and he nuzzles her neck to say hello. She leans into him, smiling at Jude and Guy. “You all seem like you’re having a good time.”
Jude nods to her, but Guy raises his pint to Robert, saying, “Your boy’s just regaling us with one of his stories.”
“Of course he is.” She grins at Robert, who raises his eyebrows enticingly. “Well, you all have fun. There is a large bubble bath waiting for me back at the hotel.” She loves her work, but it’s almost harder when she’s doing something with Robert. She wants it to be as good as she is, and that is very, very good.
Picking up his glass, Robert drains the rest of his drink. “I’ll come with you.”
Guy whines loudly, but there’s no visible reaction on Jude’s face. Susan forces her attention back to her husband. “You don’t have to. Stay, have fun.”
He shakes his head, wrapping an arm tighter around her waist. “I’ll see these fools again in about six hours. I’m sure I’ve scared them enough for one day.” Lowering his voice, he says, “Plus, we haven’t checked whether or not that tub can fit two yet.” He pats each of the men on the back. “Tomorrow, guys.”
Susan waves, saying her own good nights before Robert leads them out through the throngs of people coming in, holding her hand tightly so they wouldn’t be split apart and lose each other. He pulls her close again as they reach the sidewalk, kissing the top of her head as she flags down a taxi.
The hotel room is large, turn down service having already arrived. She makes a happy noise at the freshly linened towels and the fresh bottles of bubbles and bath salts. Standing behind her, Robert rests his hands on her waist. “Did you eat?”
Leaning back against him she says, “I picked something up from craft a few hours ago.”
“Hungry?” he asks, and she realizes that she is. Robert knows it before she says anything. “I have a feeling you’re in the mood for chocolate.”
She grins at him over her shoulder. “I have a feeling you’re right.”
He holds her close for a long moment before saying, “You start the bath. I’ll call room service.”
There’s a small feeling of emptiness as he pulls away, going back into the bedroom to call downstairs. She leans over, putting the stopper in the Jacuzzi tub before turning the water on hot, loading it with more salts and bubbles than recommended on the bottle. Bubble baths should be a time completely devoid of holding back.
Taking off her hat and scarf, she hangs them up on the coat rack. Robert is sitting on the bed, looking proud of himself. “’Right away, Mr. Downey.’ That’s always good to hear.”
She laughs at him, standing in front of him and unbuttoning his coat. “It can certainly be helpful.” He puts his arms down long enough for her to slip the coat off and onto the bed before wrapping them around her waist, head leaning against her hip. Her fingers stroke through his thick hair, kneading against his scalp and surprising small moans from him.
A sharp rap on the door and a call of “room service!” interrupts them and she sighs. Leaning down, she kisses him softly. “You get the door, I’ll check on the tub.”
He salutes her, winking as she walked back into the bathroom. The water was almost full and she was happy to see that it stayed warm. You could hardly see the tub for the bubbles and she sighed happily, sitting on the edge and unlacing her boots.
“Room service,” Robert announced, rolling the cart in. She stacks her boots next to the sink and takes the glass of Perrier Robert offers her, before he presents a large slice of chocolate cake surrounded by chocolate dipped strawberries. He picks one up, offering it to her and she bites in slowly, catching the excess juices and flecks of chocolate with her tongue. He kisses her as she chews, and she giggles as she sees the chocolate caught in his mustache.
She takes a sip of her water as he eats a large bite of chocolate cake, moaning and motioning to it with a thumbs up. Shaking her head, she opens her mouth for a bite of it, but he playfully eats it himself. Susan glares half-heartedly, leaning down to the tub, scooping up a small handful of bubbles and wiping it on his nose.
He stares at her in shock for a moment, torn between surprise and laughter. Setting down his fork, he moves the cart out of the way, back towards the door. “Well, if you want to play dirty.” Robert pulls her towards him, tickling her mercilessly as she calls out in laughter. She tries to move out of his grasp, to attack him with more bubbles, but her knees give out and she sinks against him.
Susan doesn’t even realize that they’re falling until she’s surrounded by the warm water of the tub, Robert on top of her. At first, she screams, then laughs loudly, shaking with glee and hoping her trench coat was as waterproof as advertised. Robert leans his head against the side of the tub, hollering blissfully and as soon as she feels like she can catch her breath, she sees bubbles in his beard and starts all over again.
Once the laughter subsides into gasps for air, he pulls her towards him, hugging her tightly. Her lips meet his and they kiss for a long time, Robert reaching around her head to turn off the tap. When they break apart, she just shakes her head at him, and he grins cheekily at her. “Look, we fit.”
Sighing happily, Susan just nods and kisses him again. “Yes, we do.”
