Sanctuary Hiatus Survival - Week Two

Jan 15, 2011 10:20

Ah, after a Friday night of TekWars, it is time to cleanse the palate with some "Sanctuary," specifically the episode Kush. And I think that might be all from Season One that I want to do, except for Revelations, because I just could watch Helen Magnus say, "Suck it up, Jimmy, we're going to India" forever.

"You were never ill, it was simply -"
"My physiology"

When Helen is all blonde and curly, it is sometimes hard for me to remember that she is Dr. Helen Magnus. I don't know why. I think it is just something about the masses of blonde hair. That doesn't scream "doctor" to me. And, I guess, in the 1800s, the fact that she's a woman doesn't scream "doctor" to me. idk, idk. It is sometimes hard for me to marry the idea of this Helen with current Helen. (Although it was easier in For King and Country. Probably because the masses of blonde hair were more controlled.

"As someone who wishes to spend the rest of his life repaying his savior for all she's done. I promise to make you happy, Helen. For all eternity."

Ugh. Love. Angst. All right there.

Fun fact: I literally had no idea why this episode was called Kush until right now. Unobservant Prize for me, please. (I guess I thought Kush might have been the monster? I don't know, okay? I just don't know)

I think Kush was one of the first episodes that really sold me on this show. I mean, The Five convinced me for real, but this episode was just really enjoyable for me. I think it was the first episode I rewatched, just because I liked it so much. John Druitt is probably a big part of that.

Let's just look at that stylish picture of Helen on Ashley's phone.

Okay. Ashley even says "Kush" and I still didn't realize it. Whatever.

"Mom. It's really good to hear your voice"
"IT'S REALLY GOOD TO HEAR YOURS TOO, ASHLEY"

"And if gods are smiling, I'll find some tea and make us all a pot." Legit. If I had to go down in a plane, I would want to go down with Helen Magnus (and don't make that dirty. Come on, you guys)

I just think she looks kind of adorbs in her winter gear. Whatever. (This was supposed to be a better screengrab. I blame my computer. I don't know what happened.)

Fun fact about Sherpas: Martha Stewart employs some on her estate in Connecticut or wherever. I so badly want to somehow be employed by her and get the chance to see that place. I bet it's amazing.

This episode is also one more example of sci-fi incest. We have a guy who was on an episode of BSG, and David Nykl's around. (Unrelated fact: Zelenka is my dad's favorite SGA character. He does not seem to love Elizabeth Weir but that's because he's insane a little bit.)

Important question: how close do you think they are to the secret entrance to the center of the Earth? I feel like there's a witty remark to be made about it, but I can't come up with it, so feel free to insert your own witty remark.

Okay. They are talking about "Kush" all over the place. I'm willing to accept that I'm a little bit of idiot for not knowing what Kush was before today.

Okay okay okay, here is David Nykl. Speaking in a completely normal voice and it is really catching me off guard. I'm having some feelings about him now. Probably because he doesn't have wispy hair, ill-fitting glasses, and an ongoing feud with Rodney McKay right now.

"Oh, please tell me that is tea"
"Gods are on vacation. It's coffee. Here."
"Pass"
"C'mon, it'll help you keep warm."
"I have standards, Will. Drinking coffee? Well below them."
"Man, you are a Brit to the core, aren't you?"
"And proud of it."

Okay. My affection for Will was high in this episode, I think.

Okay, this is the face Helen Magnus makes when confronted with her one true love. Too bad she has to wake up to dead Zelenka.

Oh yeah. This is also the episode where we get some Will backstory or something. We see his mom. I am not all that interested in it because I think that it never comes up again.

So I like this episode, but I don't actually have a lot to say about it. It's not super quotable or anything, it's just a good episode to sit and watch.

"Abnormals aren't like humans." - Thanks, Helen Magnus.

Whenever I watch season one, I am just reminded of how good season 3 is (Hero II excluded)

"There was a town of zombies in Uganda. And of course I ran out of ammunition just as night fell. The deep sea capsule I was in was trapped under a giant mutated squid, and there was an escaped lunatic who was able turn himself into a gigantic ape."
"Thanks. You just made that up, didn't you?"
"Only two of them."

"The less we use our eyes..."
"The more we see."

I'm really just still laughing at myself for thinking it was a Kush Monster.

Robin Dunne is ACTING in this episode, you guys. And it makes me laugh a little. I don't know why.

"Did you ever really love me? I mean truly love me? I'm just an element of your subconscious mind, so feel free to be perfectly frank."
"When I first knew you at Oxford, I loved you with my entire being."
"Those were passionate times. Gone too quickly. Followed by very dark days."
"You destroyed my heart, John."

Can I just. Can we. Okay. Feelings. The end.

Okay. The reason Will's mom looks familiar?

Two words: The Void. (Also the SG-1 episode Divide and Conquer. More sci-ficest everywhere.)

"Welcome to reality."
"Glad to be here."

And that concludes "Kush." The moral of the story? Kush is not the name of the snowbeast they were up against in this episode.
