Books 12, 13, & 14

I am getting absolutely terrible about updating. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not. I may have read something between Gods of Mars and Warlord of Mars, but I can't remember.

This novel continues where the previous one in the series, The Gods of Mars abruptly ended. At the end of the previous book, John Carter's wife, the princess Dejah Thoris, is imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun by the vile pretender goddess Issus. It is said one has to wait an entire Barsoomian year before the room the prisoner is in revolves back to the entrance. Thankfully this one did not end on a cliff hanger. It was one battle after another and introduced more races of the planet. I find myself really liking John Carter and wishing they had done more movies. I'm not sure if I will read the rest of the series or not. This one had a rather nice ending.

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable--they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash's long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they're caught, they'll be executed--but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths. I'm a sucker for post apocalypse YA fic. But I like this author's take on vampires. It's new and doesn't involve sparkles. :) The only thing I didn't like was that the relationship seemed to happen too soon. I felt it could have been timed better, especially since it's a trilogy.

In THE FEAR MACHINE, John Constantine looks for a way to reconnect to humanity -- but how can such a man ever find inner peace? Constantine finds himself encamped with a new-age pagan group that's tapping into their own psychic abilities -- but a defense contractor is out to exploit their powers. Is the company's aim just political, or is it something much more sinister?

This volume collects issues 14-22 of the original series Still reading this one. Glad it's easier to read than The Devil You Know. I had a hard time figuring out what was real vs what was dream in that one. So far none of this made an appearance in the show or movie that I can remember. Of course, it may have been planned for the show, but since it got cancelled, who knows. His look here is more movie than show though. Long black trench coat instead of the khaki reporter style jacket. I'm still really enjoying the series and I just found out that DC is bringing Constantine back in their new rebirth stories! I've seen a few panels and it looks pretty good. Of course I still have to finish this series and the one from 2011, but I'm excited that they brought it back.

And I just picked up books 2 and 3 of the Black City trilogy to read once I finish Fear Machine.
