Why did they even bother?

The government shut down has ended. The Democrats backed down and accepted the Republicans' promise to maybe discuss DACA sometime next month, if they feel like it, and if Trump can't think of anything else to twitter about ( Read more... )

it is sickening. But see what Joyce says below--we do need to credit the Dem's with what they did achieve--it's never going to be more that the smallest increment at a time when facing an opposition with no conscience.

It feels discouraging and exhausting to see our Dem leaders struggle in DC to hold the GOP tide back but we did get CHIP extended for six years. I don't see an easy answer for the Dreamers against the "Whites-only" agenda of this administration & the majority of the GOP but hopefully something can be done. I don't think continuing the shut down would have been favorable to our side because the GOP control the media and don't care how many (or how long) folks would be out of work.

So agreed. I'm divided between wanting the Dem's to have stood strong and held out a week longer for more than a loose promise on a DACA vote from the lying GOP, a "more" that they are unlikely to get no matter how long they held out, because the GOP doesn't care. And the fact that the GOP does control the media as you said, and the spin will go against the Dem's no matter what they do. I hope the Dem's could make some political hay out of the Republicans refusing funding for the military that the media won't squash. But yes, since last fall, the Dem's did manage to push back all the cuts that were connected with the CHIP bill from a GOP majority to pass it now, and that is a feat to credit them with.

I hate that the shut down has washed over the drive the women's marches generated, but I need to focus my anger on the GOP and not the Dem's. We just have to pick up and keep focused on November and getting the vote out.
