Do not be daunted
by the enormity of the world's grief.
Do justice, now.
Love mercy now.
Walk humbly, now.
You are not obligated to complete the work,
but neither are you free to abandon it.-The Talmud via a friend on fb /(Talmud 303/commentary mash-up}/Rabbi Rami Shapiro translation ( Read more... )

I'm very grateful and thankful to read your thoughtful comments, so tinged with sorrow (although i admit to being gob smacked by "everyone hates the Jews").

There are insane people everywhere (oh, not clinically insane....I just use the term because all this sh*t that is going on just seems like it has to be the work of unhinged ppl), led to their crimes by things we dont see or understand. I'm not saying that to excuse them....I'm saying that only as a preface to my next statement, which is that I really believe that there are many more ppl of sanity and humanity than ever there are of these other, dark-hearted, ruined ones....

I hope you have a purple menorah to place in your window.

Thank you for the article. I did a little searching around on google because I wasn't happy with the vague Talmud attribution either.

I do believe there are more humane/less violent people as well--I just wish one of them were in the White House and not inciting the white nationalists.racists/antisemites, misogynists, and transphobes, and keeping Latina/o kids in cages . . .

I don't have a purple electric menorah, but I still have purple candles for my non-electric/manual menorah from a dear friend. (-:

The events in Kentucky and Pittsburgh are heartbreaking. The current climate of hate seems to be getting worse and worse.

Thank you for the information about Rose Mallinger. I wasn't aware that she was a Holocaust survivor. Very sad.

Actually, the info about her seems to be wrong and stories got confused. One article said it was a man who usually sits in front of her who is a Holocaust survivor and would have been the one shot except that police stopped him before he went in. In any event, it is sad he has to deal with this trauma here and now again and that Rose made it to 97 and was murdered.

May enough people make it to the polls to make up for the people the fascists block from voting. *hugs*

One thing is true is that increased antisemitism is almost always aligned with an increasing extremism - and that is a very scary thing. Unfortunately, I wish I could say I'm surprised that something like this happened, but I'm not. We have a president who is encouraging racism and violence toward people who disagree with him. Whether or not he meant something like this to happen, it doesn't matter. *sending so much love*
