“Sehun.” The voice was almost a whisper but the blond boy shot up from his position on the couch next to the bed, moonlight streamed in through one of the open windows and he felt the breeze flow in and cool his body down. He looked to the bed,
“Water, I need water.” Sehun walked to the small table and grabbed the white jug that looked blue now because of the light that was reflecting off the blue walls. He poured it into a small plastic clear cup and took it to the person on the bed. Sehun watched as the person gulped down the water down in one go.
The cup was handed back to him and he threw it in the bin next to the bed. Reaching out he grabbed the person’s hand in his, curling his fingers around the other’s, cherishing the warmth that was radiating from them. How long would he have until the warmth stopped and those hands would become cold and lifeless?
“Do you need anything else?” The other boy shook his head, moving to the side as he patted the small space next to him, wanting Sehun to join him. Kicking off his shoes, Sehun climbed into the bed, wrapping his arms around the smaller boy and pulling him closer, as close as possible, for he did not want to let go. He was not ready to let go, he would never be ready to let go.
----
“Sehun, you should go. Go home, get some rest and you can come back in the afternoon again. We’ll take care of him until then.”
“What if he leaves before that?” The tan boy looked at his friend, his once cheerful, energetic friend. But not anymore, Sehun had lost all of that cheerfulness, had lost all the energy. He was losing himself, as he lost Luhan.
“Sehun, Luhan’s not going to leave.” He paused, turning his head away as he looked towards the closed door, behind which, doctors were now talking to a boy who was a mere 4 years older than them, but whose life was going to be taken away from him much sooner than them, as he gripped his best friend’s hand, “he’s not going to leave yet.”
-----
“Stop sulking.” Sehun looked at Luhan was smiling at him gently. It was unfair, how he could look so peaceful knowing he was leaving Sehun all alone soon, “you look better when you smile.”
“Well I’m sorry I can’t smile like you right now, because unlike you I actually care about the fact that you are fucking dying!!” The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them, and Sehun watched as Luhan’s previous smile was replaced by an angry, frustrated and painful expression. He mentally cursed himself for being the reason Luhan’s mood got ruined.
“I’m sor-“
“You think I want to die?” Sehun flinched at the painful tone of Luhan’s voice. Their gazes locked and Sehun watched as tears began to form in Luhan’s eyes. He got up from his seat, walking to the bed as he climbed into the space that Luhan had created for him. “You think I want to leave you? You think I don’t hate myself? I hate myself, I hate what’s happening to me, I hate this-“
Sehun gathered Luhan into his arms, as the boy broke down in tears, unknowingly Sehun felt the tears he had been trying to keep in all this time flow out as well as he rubbed circles into Luhan’s back. Soon the crying stopped and Luhan wrapped his arms around Sehun, pulling himself closer.
“I love you. I will always love you.” Sehun pulled away from Luhan, bending his head so he could connect their lips together. Warmth spread from head to toe as Luhan responded and kissed him back. Sehun pulled Luhan closer as they kissed harder, pouring all their emotions into that one connection.
“I love you to Luhan.” Sehun whispered as he peppered Luhan with kisses, “I will always love you.”
-----
When Sehun first met Luhan the first thing he noticed was that Luhan had this glow around him, and wherever he went, or whatever he touched, for Sehun it would glow. Luhan was the bright spot in his dull life. Luhan was his everything.
“Don’t let go.”
“I will never let go Luhan.” Sehun wrapped his arms around Luhan’s frail body, the medication had ruined him, he had lost so much weight and the hospital gowns looked gigantic on him. Sehun placed his head on Luhan’s shoulder and cherished the warmth Luhan was radiating, how long more would this warmth last?
“Sehun?”
“Mhmm?”
“After I leave, I want you to start composing again.”
“Luhan, we talked about this, I told you not to bring up any of that leaving talk again.” Luhan sighed as he threaded his fingers with Sehun’s.
“I know, but I want you to keep writing for me. Keep me alive, by writing about us.” Sehun’s breath hitched as the pain returned to his heart again.
“Okay.” He tightened his arm around Luhan again, afraid of losing him so soon. He wanted more time with Luhan, this was not enough. He needed more time. It’s funny how he thought he would have ample time to do things with Luhan, its funny how he thought they would have forever, and now they barely had any time left together.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
“One more thing?” Sehun nodded against Luhan shoulder, “I want you tonight. Each and every part of you. I want to see and feel all of you before I leave.”
“Stop talking like you aren’t going to be here tomorrow. Go to sleep, we can do that some other time.”
He was about to pull up the covers when Luhan reached out and stopped his arm, “Sehun. I want you to make love to me, tonight.”
“Why are you being like this?” Sehun asked as Luhan scrambled on top of him, he wasn’t given further time to continue his questions about Luhan’s strange behavior as the boy planted his lips on his.
-----
Sehun woke up feeling heavy, and not heavy because Luhan’s head was lying on his chest, heavy because he knew something was wrong. Something was very very wrong.
“Luhan.” He said as he carded his fingers through the honey blond locks. “Please not yet.” But he knew he was wrong, he didn’t have to check, he knew. The warmth was gone. He cradled Luhan’s body closer, attempting to give the boy some warmth, as he whispered, “I love you” over and over again.
Eventually he just gave up, holding Luhan in his arms and going back to sleep with his boyfriend. Except Sehun knew he would wake up soon, while his boyfriend wouldn't.
-----
“I’m sorry Sehun.” Jongin wrapped his arms around Sehun as they stood around the newly carved gravestone. His friends, one by one patted him and hugged him, and then left choosing to leave Sehun alone with Luhan for a few minutes.
Tears that he kept in came flowing out as he placed a bouquet of flowers next to the stone.
“You remember I told you, you always had this glow around you, and that everywhere you went or everything you touched would have that glow?” He wiped his tears and smiled, “Well I’m living in your afterglow now.”
