dine in the dark
Jongin knew his day was only going to get worse when he saw his best friend and his overly affectionate boyfriend sitting at their usual table with identical grins on their faces. As he plopped down on the opposite chair his thoughts were only confirmed.
“What is that?” Sehun was holding out a dark blue envelope out to him and Luhan was staring at the envelope with a strange gleam in his eyes.
“An invitation.”
“For what?”
“A blind date.”
Jongin scoffed as he took the envelope from Sehun then proceeded to tear it open. He read all of its contents and crushed the letter inside before making an extra effort to make sure it landed directly in the bin.
“No way in hell I’m going to that.”

He was going to kill Sehun and Luhan for doing this to him. Sitting in the dark in some sort of room while people constantly kicked, slapped and even touched him in really inappropriate ways was not how he had planned to spend his day. But apparently he had no control over how his life would go on about, not when there was Sehun and Luhan to do that for him. Blackmailing, he can’t stand it. How on earth had they even dug up that video of him anyway? He doesn’t even remember them being there, or maybe they were and he had been too drunk to notice.
“Go on the blind date and we will forget about the video”
“I don’t want to! I’m fine being single.”
“No you are not. You need to go on this date.”
“What will you do if I don’t?”
“You don’t want the whole world seeing you do the Macarena while wearing only a tutu do you?”
“Fine.”
Feeling out his phone from his pocket he slowly placed it under the table (since cell phones weren’t allowed inside this place) and dialled Sehun’s number.
“Hello. Who is this?”
“I’m going to kill you. Mark my words Oh Sehun I’m going to find you and kill you.”
“By the end of today you will be thanking me instead. Having fun?”
“If by having fun you mean am I enjoying being physically harassed in a dark room by people I cannot see then, no I am not.”
“Awww but Jonginiee I told you it was going to be a blind date and you said okay.”
“First of all I didn’t say okay. Second of all when you said blind date I didn’t think you meant it literally. Sehun there are no lights in this place how am I supposed to see the person I’m having dinner with!”
“Hence a blind date!” He heard some shuffling in the background and heard Luhan’s voice ring out,
“Is he having a good time?”
“He’s having a blast!” Sehun replied back cheerfully and Jongin could see him smirking on the other side. He was so dead when Jongin got his hands on him.
“Excuse me sir but mobile phones aren’t permitted inside. Kindly hand it over I will keep it with me until your dinner date is over.”
“Bye Jonginee! Have fun!”
Jongin glared at the person who took his phone from his hand, he was pretty sure the people who worked here had night vision goggles or something to help them see and so he knew the person could see him glaring at them.
A chair was pulled out in front of him and Jongin turned his head towards the noise. “Smexy dancing machine?” Jongin smacked his face with his palms killing Sehun a hundred different ways in his head for coming up with such a stupid username. He nodded his head before he realised that it was dark and the person couldn’t see him.
“Ye-umm yes.” There was a moment of silence and Jongin heard some more shuffling in front of him. Someone’s hand rubbed up against his back and Jongin moved his chair closer to his table.
“Are you my date?” he felt stupid for even asking it. This whole thing was a mistake, he should have never let Sehun and Luhan blackmail him. How was this even supposed to work, maybe the person in front of him was an old creep who wanted to get in his pants or maybe he was a wanted criminal but Jongin couldn’t tell because he couldn’t freaking see anything. Maybe he was going to get mugged and murdered tonight. He regretted not being able to fulfil his mission of taking revenge on Sehun and Luhan. Maybe he’ll come and haunt them as a ghost. He wouldn’t let them forget this for the rest of their lives.
“Yes.” The person replied and Jongin hoped he looked as young as he sounded. From then on that was it. After felt like one whole hour (when it was only just about two minutes) the boy in front of him cleared his throat. Jongin knew he should be trying to initiate a conversation but all he could think was how it was so dark and someone was feeling up his thigh.
“So”
“So”
Jongin gently grabbed the hand that was on his thigh and smacked it against the leg of the table, he registered a loud “hey” coming from the side and the hand was taken back.
“My name’s Joonmyun.” He realised that it was the person that was seated in front of him that was talking to him and he turned his head back to face what he thought could be the shape of the boy.
“Oh, umm I’m Jongin.”
A small chuckle was heard and Jongin couldn’t figure out if it was from the person in front of him or if it was from some other creepy person listening to everything they were saying while watching them from a near-by table.
“I know. Sehun and Luhan told me about you.”
“They what?” Jongin automatically moved forward. This was news to him. He had thought he was coming here for a blind date where the other person also would not know who he was. But wow Sehun and Luhan had more control over how things went than he had initially thought. They were going to get it, he was going to make sure of it.
He cleared his throat, trying to ask the boy more questions about those two idiots. His throat however was all dried up, he hadn’t had anything to drink while waiting. He was thirsty, he needed to drink something. Jongin moved his hand around the table trying to figure out where the glass was kept so he could just sip on something to patch up his dry throat.
“Yeah, they told me about you before I came here. I agreed to it because they threatened me with something personal. Luhan knows a lot about me.” Jongin’s hand stopped midway near the butter knife.
“They blackmailed you?”
“Something like that.” The boy chuckled again and Jongin maybe might have liked the sound of it but he wasn’t going to admit it. “Well it’s not like I mind anyway. I think this place is quite interesting.”
“Interesting my ass.” Jongin muttered before moving his hand again to find his glass. “They did the same to me by the way. Those two, they deserve to be punished.”
“I agree,” a momentary pause, “Jongin if you don’t want to be here we can always leave you know.” He couldn’t help but notice that Joonmyun sounded a bit upset when suggesting that and Jongin was never a rude person so he shook his head,
“No its fine. I’d like to get to know my date.”

Fifteen minutes into their so called ‘date’ Jongin was actually glad he decided to stay. Turns out Joonmyun was a very nice and interesting person to sit and talk with. When it had been the time to order Jongin had realised they couldn’t really see the menu and had to have this waiter read out what was there to them. He heard Joonmyun chuckling again and he felt himself laugh along with him. Maybe Sehun had been right, Jongin needed this. Joonmyun was nice and Jongin felt comfortable with him. It had been so long since he had gone on a date yet alone spent some time doing something different and fun. Maybe he would have to thank Sehun for doing something like this. Maybe.
The longer they spent talking and laughing at stupid things the more he wanted to see what Joonmyun looked like, he wanted to maybe have a date where he could actually look at Joonmyun while he spoke.
“I think we should leave.”
“Oh?” Joonmyun sounded disappointed again.
“No I mean I’ll take you somewhere else for dinner. This is just plain stupid.”
“Oh.” Jongin smiled at the sudden change in his voice, “Okay.”
Jongin pressed his palm down on the button that was supposed to call out a waiter while Joonmyun started talking about a nice café nearby.
“Are you both done?”
“Oh God yes. The bill?”
“It’s already paid for by your friend Sehun.”
“Right of course. So how does this work? Are you going to show us out?”
“Yes sir just grab my hand.”
Jongin nodded his head and grabbed onto the hand in front of him.

“I’m really sorry that happened to you.” Joonmyun said while pressing the ice pack to Jongin’s forehead. Jongin couldn’t help but notice that Joonmyun was smiling even while doing that.
“You think it’s funny don’t you?”
“No.” Joonmyun replied, “Okay well maybe a little.”
“How was I supposed to know that I grabbed that man’s wife’s hand? I couldn’t see anything!”
“I know, and I think it’s unfair that the man had to hit you. But it was a bit funny. Mostly just not funny though.” Joonmyun said with a chuckle.
They were sitting at the café Joonmyun had told him about, Jongin nursing a bloody nose and swollen forehead. Joonmyun was all sparkly eyes and nice smiles pressing an ice pack to Jongin’s forehead in attempt to reduce the swelling. Noticing Jongin’s stare Joonmyun dropped his hand with the ice pack down to his lap and looked away, his cheeks now full of colour. Unaware of what he was doing Jongin reached out and grabbed onto the hand, and held it tight.
“I had a nice time today, even though it was the most stupid idea for a date ever.” Joonmyun smiled his megawatt smile at him and Jongin felt a little breathless at the beauty of it. Every time Joonmyun smiled Jongin’s heart would flutter just a little bit more.
“Me too.” Joonmyun retracted his hand from Jongin’s and stood up taking his cup of coffee with him. “I should head back now. Student council meeting is at seven tomorrow and I need to be there early as president.”
Jongin stood up with him, undeniably upset that the date was over. Inside his head he could imagine Sehun asking him to man up and ask Joonmyun on another date. Somewhere better than the stupid dark place. Joonmyun looked to be contemplating something and before Jongin could ask, the shorter boy quickly pressed a chaste kiss to Jongin’s lips.
Jongin stood there perplexed unable to comprehend what just took place. Joonmyun quickly puffed out his cheeks and muttered something thing along the lines of “IgottagonowIhopeIseeyouagainbyeJongin-ah” and ran out of the café.
Once the bell of the café tinkled signalling a customer had left Jongin grabbed his cup and ran out behind Joonmyun. Swinging the door open he saw Joonmyun’s small form a few feet ahead of him.
“Joonmyun!”
Said boy turned around smiling widely at Jongin.
“I’ll pick you up tomorrow at the gate after class ends.” As he received the megawatt smile again Jongin felt his insides churn with anticipation for the next day.
“Are you taking me out on a date?”
Jongin smiled and nodded his head, “Yeah let’s go on a date.”

“Sehun-ah why is it so dark in your apartment?”
“Fucking Jongin!” Sehun fished out his phone from his pocket dialing his best friend’s number. Three rings, “What the hell did you do?”
“Just returning a favour Sehunnie.”
“Come back and fix this.”
“Can’t. I’m out with Joonmyun right now and we won’t be back for some time.” Sehun heard someone laughing in the background and he sighed while leaning against the door-frame.
“Is he having a good time?”
“He’s going to have a blast.” Jongin replied to Joonmyun before cutting Sehun’s call.
