Writing is, in a way, like figure drawing. Or, at least nonfiction writing is. There's this form, this person in front of you, naked as truth, and your eyes are taking in the way the light bounces off of her skin. You pick up your pencil and you start with the part that intrigues you the most. The back of the knee, say, or the curve of the neck
