Explanation: Eevees are described as being adaptable which is what Lavi must be because of being Bookman's apprentice. They have the ability to go with any element much as Lavi does. And, just for good measure, they look a little like rabbits which is a nickname used canonly at least once for him.
History:
Novel canon link &
Manga canon link Personality: When we first meet Lavi, he's a bit of a mixed bag. He appears kind and always up for a laugh, a smile usually on his face, even having the audacity to say that Allen is the brat. It's quite easy to take Lavi at face value since it's difficult to see him in any other light. Of course, that was at first. Once we get into (some of) his backstory and reasons for why he is the way he is, we understand that there's more to this fiery redhead than meets the eye.
Chosen to be Bookman's apprentice, Lavi has been told (and reminded) numerous times that he should "not have a heart". For better or worse, this creed hasn't stuck with him since he arrived at the Black Order. Not much is known about Lavi's personality before the Order but some of the comments he's made in canon as well as an arc in the story has made it seem as though he followed Bookman's orders. Once he arrived at the Black Order, Lavi thought he could simply put on a fake smile and pretend to make friends. However, the people of the Order proved to be different than other people he'd met previously.
Even before Lavi met D.Gray-man's protagonist, Allen Walker, he knew that he had started to stray from his path. His first hint of this was when he met Doug, a young Finder employed to the Black Order. Doug's kind heart and caring nature led him to his demise, becoming an Akuma that Lavi was forced to later destroy when it attacked the Order itself. This pained him more than he wished to admit, making him cry and feel vulnerable emotionally for the first time, possibly since he was a child. Even so, he still insisted that he was fine, still not possessing a heart.
Once he met Allen, it slowly became apparent to both reader and Lavi that he was starting to care for the people around him. His carefree nature helps him to make friends, even though he tends to annoy them. He will generally come up with nicknames for the males he meets, or will do something that they say not to do, such as calling Kanda Yuu by his first name (Yuu) and referring to Allen as "beansprout". There's never been a canon instance of him using a nickname for a female but he does generally tend to get a bit too...interested in attractive women. At those times, it's difficult to get him back on track even when it's supposed to be serious. However, he seems to have been getting better at controlling his urges and has caused less interference as time has passed.
Since he has gone through so much, including mind control at the hands of his enemies, Lavi has sort of had the gears switched on for him. He's prone to ending up confused and irritated on how to proceed. He's been shown at least once since returning to the Black Order while talking to Bookman at a loss on how to deal with his situation. Though he seems to act the same on the surface to both his friends and his master, it's very clear that he hasn't forgotten the lessons he's learned. He seems to be more protective, more genuinely caring about what happens to those he knows and cares for. This naturally makes him more protective of those who manage to get close to the "heart he shouldn't have" and the emotions he shouldn't acknowledge. He's also incredibly headstrong which isn't surprising since he's still a teenager. He's become an Exorcist even though he felt that it was beyond his reach, throwing himself into danger and pushing himself far beyond his limits, not for himself but for those around him. This is yet another problem associated with his emotions and his inability to know how to truly control them.
Very slowly, Lavi has begun to understand that he's actually one of the humans he so callously called "stupid" upon arriving in the Black Order. His hardened personality has receded and we tend to see the cheerful side of him, the side that makes jokes and enjoys invading people's personal spaces all too often. He's the one who, along with Lenalee, tries to break up the endless fights with Kanda and Allen even though he instigates some himself. He is easy to get along with though he can sometimes complain overly much.
Of course, twelve years worth of training is a hard habit to break and we can still see this serious side of him from time to time. In most recent chapters, Lavi and Bookman have had serious discussions about the implications of Cross' admission that the Fourteenth was inside of Allen all along. In these times, Lavi is definitely playing the "Bookman" role, getting information and squirrelling it away inside of his mind. Even then he can't help being who he is but Bookman seems to be more used to this side of his apprentice, not throwing it into question. It's been shown that, even in the most desperate situations, Lavi's mind is always working, feeding him information that he's had to accumulate on the Vatican and the various Orders around the world. He knew who Malcolm Levillie was and recalled the atrocities the man had committed even when the Black Order was under attack by a Level Four Akuma. When he may have once been heartless about recalling such things, it was now with disgust that he remembered how the man was willing to sacrifice anyone in the name of God.
As of right now, Lavi can be found in a great deal of turmoil, possibly more so since he has learnt that he was not Bookman's only apprentice. It's unknown canonly how he'll handle this knowledge but it was another part of history that was locked away from him by his mentor. If there's one thing he hates, it seems to be knowledge that he doesn't have and even to be told that he can't have it. It was met with shock the first time so it's not unlikely that he may be found attempting to work through these problems on his own. He's also been tortured for an extended period of time by the Noah so it's safe to say that any Noah he meets will not be met with fondness, not that he was fond of them to begin with.

First Person:
1) You discover a secret passage in a basement. What do you do?
Go'n explore it, of course! It's a Bookman's job to stay informed about everythin', secret passages included. You never know when it might come in handy, too. Could be used as'n emergency exit if we're in a pinch.
2) Have you ever wanted to communicate with aliens from another planet?
There're aliens on those other planets? If we can talk to 'em, sure. Think it'd be kinda interestin' to see how different our planets are.
3) Would you feel comfortable stating your opinion to a very important person?
I have before so I guess I'd do it again. I keep some things to myself no matter what so it's a bit of yes'n no. All depends on if my mouth moves faster'n my brain, which it kinda tends to do whether I like it or not.
4) Do you like to do things according to plan?
As nice as plans are, it's an Exorcist's job to be prepared for anythin'. I'm kinda leanin' toward "no" since I joined the Order since there's somethin' to be said for bein' spontaneous.
5) Do you think that lies are sometimes necessary?
Of course they are. Doesn't make it right but there're some things that people don't need to know. If everyone knew everything about everyone else, I dunno if we'd even have half the wars that we do now.
Third Person:
Okay, let's take a closer look at this.
A russet brown paw comes up and flexes in front of Lavi's face. An ear twitches as it does, another oddity that he's not used to. His tail moves lazily behind him just to add to the experience, making him feel like everything is natural when it's just not.
For Lavi, it's interesting to experience what it's like to be an animal but he'd never thought that he'd be stuck like one. This wasn't even an animal he'd even seen before! Since he'd arrived, his mind had been enticed by every scrap of information that was given to him. How he wished he had the ability to write but that was a skill that would take time to re-learn. Paws weren't meant to hold a quill...or whatever else they used here to write.
It wasn't all bad and at least he didn't end up as one of the odder ones he'd seen already. Some of these creatures resembled animals he knew from back home with something changed. Others looked like inanimate objects that picked up and got a mind of their own. Even more looked like things he'd never even observed before, almost tempting him to come up with names for them just to be the first to claim naming rights.
He also wasn't alone. It was a thought that comforted him, knowing he wasn't the only one who had been hurled into this strange place and changed. The question that did unsettle him was why? They didn't seem to have any reason to be here other than to be cute. Like I need another reason to look good, Lavi thought, grinning to himself. His sense of humour was intact, that was something.
Sighing, Lavi stretched out on the pile of hay that served as his bed. Yeah, he had changed physically and been placed in a new world but, considering where he was taken from, he couldn't complain. Even being fuzzy and thrown among creatures he'd never seen or heard of before was better than the place he'd been in.
"Lavi the Eevee. Got a nice ring to it." He laughed to himself and lay down, ready for sleep. He could have ended up in worse places.
