"It hurts," the pea whimpered quietly as Sheppard pressed himself more deeply inside the plump, round body.
"I know," he said, caressing the firm flesh soothingly. "It won't be long now."
Around them the other peas cried as the churning acid started to burn and dissolve them. A lucky few of them, those with unblemished skin, would last a precious few minutes more, but most of them writhed in agony as stomach fluids worked on breaking their resistance. Sheppard could feel it, the drag and fizzle where he protected his pea's little hole, but he didn't think he could hold out much longer. A violent wave of acid slammed them against a nearby cluster of peas; as one they cried out. Another wave, and they tumbled, pressed through a slick narrow pathway, and then, just when Sheppard thought he might give up-
Water. Blessed, cool water, calming their aches like the cold glass of Sheppard's bottle, rocking them gently as they bobbed up and down.
"Oh, that's typical. After months in a freezer I finally get on a plate, and of course I'm eaten by a bulimic," the pea complained, but he sounded relieved.
"Yeah, how terrible to-" live a little longer, Sheppard wanted to say, but an overwhelming feeling of vertigo shut him up, made him cling for fear to lose himself in the wild liquid outside. Darkness surrounded them, and he wondered where the current would carry them.
"Great, into the unknown again." The pea shivered around him, against him, and Sheppard hadn't thought he could enter the trembling body any deeper, but apparently he had been wrong. "So what happens now," the pea wanted to know, his voice so uncertain that Sheppard couldn't help himself, had to lick at that tasty flesh.
"I don't know," he admitted, "but hey, at least we're together."
