On the subject of fruit

Dec 27, 2012 17:34

I'm having this interesting conversation with kisahawklin about fruit and where to store it. Apparently in her corner of the world, fruit bowls are a fascinating and unknown thing whereas where I'm from, you get them in all shapes and sizes and, well, that's where you put fruit. Cultural differences for the yay!

So! Poll time!

Poll Fruit!

Most fruit goes into a bowl, but berries go in the fridge - they spoil too quickly otherwise.

We have a relative large number of people living here, so we tend to buy costco-sized boxes/containers of fruit, so a lot of times it just... stays in the containers... *red faced*

Ohohoh! Yes, this! So, our oranges/grapefruit come in a huge box - like the size of a Xerox paper box from the office! And we keep it in the box. (My brother sends it from Florida every year for Christmas.)

And then after a certain point we put them in the fridge because they would spoil.

Yes, when it gets on a bit, we start putting fruit in the fridge.

Also shamefacedly I will admit that we rarely have a fruit bowl at all unless company is coming... it's just... out? (We have a LOT of fruit at one time, far more than would fit into a bowl. Sometimes we will have a bowl out and put bananas, apples and a couple of oranges in it, maybe a pear or kiwi?)

I keep my grapes, apples and berries in the fridge, as I like the really cold and crisp. I often put citrus in there too, it often seems sweeter chilled. Cut fruit (e.g. pineapple and watermelon once chopped up) goes in there too. Bananas, pears, peaches, uncut pineapples/watermelon etc go in the fruit bowl.

Most fruits go into the fridge. Things that need to ripen stay in bowls on the counter only until they're ripe, unless they have a thick enough skin that bugs won't get to them. Blueberries go into the freezer, because frozen blueberries are an amazing treat when it's hot out and an amazing ingredient in my lemon-blueberry loaf when it's not.

The only thing I put into the fridge is watermelon. :-)
