Saturday while getting my nails done we were watching England vs. USA - why is the flag used by Britain NOT the Union Jack?? I've Googled until I'm cross eyed.

help?

I believe that it's because England and not Great Britain is playong in the World Cup.
There is a Scottish flag and a Welsh one but the flags that are flying are the English flag of St George

Oh sweetie, thank you so much. I'm horridly ashamed to admit it never dawned on me that of course each country would have it's own flag. I know for a fact it wasn't something I learned in school, the Union Jack was/is always portrayed as the flag of England.

It's England's flag. The Union Jack is for the entirety of the United Kingdom. However, in soccer, each subset (Scotland, Wales, North Ireland, England) have their own team, and thus use their historical flag for that region.

omg, I feel like SUCH a dur-head! It never dawned on me to think of the division of the countries vs. the empire - hence the UNION
