My first few days of college were.. well, to be quite frank, they were miserable. I was experiencing a whole level of social anxiety that was unparalleled to that point. All of this exacerbated by having gone cold turkey on my previous months of partying, moving 1200 miles away from everyone I knew, and finding out a friend of mine died in a car ( Read more... )

All the feels! I'm glad it didn't take long for you to find the fun at school. But I remember feeling lonely and isolated too (and for much longer than it sounds like you did!)

I sped up the timeframe in the story a little here. It was definitely a year of ups and downs for me, but I still look back on it fondly. It was the only year I had to really live "on my own" since I developed a tumor and had to move back in with my parents. By the time I was done living with family members, I was married and had a baby!

New experiences like college can be so difficult. I definitely had my fair share of difficulties finding my place. So glad you found your way through it and didn’t quit.

Oh man, I remember a pair of girls I met the day I moved into my Freshman dorm room. I played volleyball with them on the nearby green and drove them to Applebee’s where we had dinner with their other new friends. . . who turned out to be really into this cult-like Baptist church we have locally. They all kinda started shunning me after I ordered a ginger beer at a coffee shop and they thought it was alcoholic, but it was for the best. Soon I found my actual people. This was great!

The cute guy's grandma was convinced that root beer was an evil alcoholic beverage, and root beer floats were gateway drugs

Starting college can be very rough, especially with "guys who were struggling to grow facial hair." That was a great phrase! It sounds like you had a great time, once you got over the initial bumps.
