Help me techie-types! (please)

So, I want to update my Windows XP from service pack 1 to 2 or possibly 3 as I will then be able to connect my shiny new phone to it. Unfortunately I run Firefox as a browser and IE isn't working so I can't use the Windows Update program as that wants to use IE

Thanks - this may be an (even) dumb(er)question - will doing this affect the files saved on my computer? they won't get wiped will thwey?
