Thanksgiving in Mogadishu

It was hot.  It was dusty.  It was a little over a month since the shit had hit the fan so everyone was still in a Really Bad Place.  It sucked.  When you're young, stuck in a shit hole, and feeling powerless, it can be kinda difficult to really take stock of your life.  Add to all this the reminders from home: You're missed, we have everyone here ( Read more... )

this took me a long while to get through. I am glad I did, don't get me wrong. But it was still a hard thing to get through. A lot of the things you share about your time in the military are hard for me to get through, though. Part of it is how awful so many things were, and it's hard for me that you went through them (yes, I know, they were in the past, but the scars are still on you). I am never sad that you share them, or that I get through them eventually, mind you. Part of what makes it rough is the nature of wars themselves. It is both a very complicated and very simple reaction that I have, and it really boils down to me being most grateful that you came home at all.

*hug* Thank you. I wrote this one with a smile if that helps. Yeah, it sucked but I got to be one of the heroes of the turkey run. That, and a healthy outlook on what things matter and all I have to be thankful for. This is a happy memory for me, one of the ones I hold onto when I need to see something good that came from that place. So smile with me at the thought of a convoy of soldiers acting like fools as they gobble like turkeys and people actually volunteering to peel potatoes just so they could say they did because usually we get instant mashed.
