i just don't see why people believe so strongly that allowing any two people that fall in love to marry is such a dangerous thing!! two people fall in love, the two want to confirm their love to everyone. it's normal. it's natural. it's life. is the concept of marriage so weak that it could be "destroyed" just based on the sex of the individuals ( Read more... )

What's even more frustrating than this opposition to marriage is the opposition to civil unions which approximate marriage. Marriage, I suppose, could be considered to be the religiously/spiritually derived version of a civil union. In this sense, structurally, it's a subset of civil union, being a specific religious type. In this case, it would make sense for the government to no longer specifically recognize marriage, but rather to recognize civil unions, of which marriage is a sub-type. Unfortunately, the religious conservatives believe that legal benefits should only be extended to those unions which conform to religious standards, thus marriage ( ... )
