I'm tired of writing for $0.02 per word. It's not enough, and since I'm ghost writing it's not going to get me anywhere because I don't have anything to show for my work. Getting material accepted for publishing is a LONG hard process, as I've deteremined from reading the journals and twitters and websites of my author friends. Or want-to-be-author friends. You'll be writing, submitting, getting rejections, and re-submitting, editing and re-editing, likely for years and several markets and several dozens/hundreds of short stories or several novels before earning sales money. If you have a *passion* for it, by all means, throw your energy into it. But if you think it will substitute for a salary quickly, you might need to rethink your plan.

Maybe I'll get lucky, but I have no expectation of suddenly becoming a rich and famous author. I didn't fully explain that while I intend to try getting some fiction published, I'm actually hoping to make some money writing magazine articles, which I understand is a lot more sell-able.
