Evening walk

This evening we hiked up our hill in a direction we’d never been before to investigate a large and suspiciously square clearing that Orion found on Google Earth (we’ve lived here 11 years and we’re still finding new things!). Your land is so gorgeous! And hmm, yeah, so curious to wonder about the history behind it. (also aww Lucky looks so happy! SQUIRREL~!)

Squirrels burrow? I just learned some new things: I had not even heard of ground squirrels before. I thought they all lived in trees!

Fascinating! Is there any chance you have a local library with some archival information on the place?

There ARE ground squirrels, and we have them, but these are not even ground squirrels - they're regular tree squirrels, like this. Their main food supply is the seeds from spruce cones, and year by year they build up huge mounds from discarded pieces of cones. In the summer they live and nest in the trees, like any self-respecting squirrel, but in the winter they live in burrows in the mounds.
