There Percy was, peacefully processing the most recent shipment of books and entering them in the catalog, when out of nowhere, his hackles rose for no reason. And he sighed, because usually these days, when things happened for no reason--
"So which do you prefer, surf or turf?" Hwan said in Percy's ear, popping up at his side like a bad jack-in-the-box.
"Okay," Percy dropped his head for a moment. "What do you want this time?" The question felt all too familiar in his mouth. He glared at Hwan, who had mouthed it along with him.
The kitsune grinned back brightly. "I'm peachy, thanks. It's you I'm worried about."
Percy turned back to the blinking cursor on the computer screen, beckoning him to finish the assigned tasks so he could go home for the night. "We're past closing time. How did you get in?"
The grin disappeared and Hwan favored him with a why do I put up with you, dolt? expression. "You invited me in after hours last week, remember?"
Percy raised his eyebrows, recalling last week's incident with the slimy things and the… "Hey," he said, sitting up. "That was only for the one time!"
"You didn't specify it, old chum," Hwan said, and Percy favored him with a give it a fucking rest, you're not British expression. Hwan shrugged. I like the British, they have better slang his expression said back.
"I'm not your old chum," Percy said instead of what he was really thinking.
"Look at it this way," Hwan blinked earnestly. "It saves you the trouble of having to invite me past the after hours wards next time. Might as well get it engraved in silver, now."
Percy stared at him, wondering when he'd been cast in this nightmarish perversion of a screwball comedy.
"So anyway," Hwan resumed, grin coming back and--was he leaning closer to Percy? "Anyway, since we've got that cleared up, you might as well come to dinner."
"…dinner."
"With me," Hwan clarified.
"With you."
"As in, a date."
"What?"
"And you don't even have to put out afterwards."
Percy put his hands to his temples and massaged in tiny circles. "I'm not…I don't...Two words. Ligeia, and no."
"That's three words."
"Oh, for fuck's sake!"
Hwan raised a single eyebrow. "Surf. Or turf?" And smiled infuriatingly in the face of Percy's teeth.
