Out in these parts, you get 17 weeks pregnancy leave and 35ish weeks parental leave per baby. Only the pregnant person gets to take pregnancy leave (ie the first 17 wks after baby is born) but both parents can split the 35ish weeks of leave....but you can't both take 35. You get 35 total per kid, to spend however you want.
What bugs me is not getting a full year when we (finally) adopt a baby. But I don't get a paid leave anyway, since I am self employed, so I can take as much time as I want. As a regular old employee however, Ian will be entitled to the 35 weeks.....which will be nice!
Glad you could take more than a few weeks anyway - good for you!!
Oh, I get a chunk of the EI (those rules you are listing are for EI which are Canada wide). The part I am irritated with, and see as discriminatory based on my gender, are the rules of my employer, UBC> They offer fantastic benefits in addition to those provided by EI, just not to biological dads.
and yes, the 35 weeks Ian gets is nice ... I took as much of that leave as I could afford (harder to survive on 48% of your salary for very long). Lauren was laid off at about the time she got pregnant so her maternity leave lasted approximately 3 weeks by the time the baby was born.
