Edith Wharton was born on January twenty-fourth, 1862, at 14 West 23rd Street in New York City. She stayed there through the winters, but when summer came, she and her family moved to their house in Rhode Island. In 1879, she met Harry Stevens, a wealthy young man and an ardent suitor. They were engaged but the marriage was stopped by his mother, who was very influential. The next year, Edith met Walter Berry, who became her lifelong friend and was a great help to her literary career. She did a lot of writing and publishing in the next few years. In 1898, Wharton experienced a nervous breakdown, the first of many throughout the rest of her life. In September of 1902 she moved into her house, The Mount, in Lenox, Massachusetts. At the end of the year, Teddy, too, began a long series of mental and physical breakdowns. In the first part of 1903, she met Henry James and they became very good friends.
