Growing up I had indoor/outdoor cats... but after all the AGONY that arrangment caused (will she come home??... did she get run over??.. OMG is that smushy cat on the side of the road MINE [no, not this time]...) when DrM & I got our cat we decided she would be strictly an indoor cat... and I really feel much more comfortable. She doesn't bring home fleas, tics or any dead "presents" for us,... and I don't have to worry about her not being there when I come home.
I much prefer letting them out. Murphy was an indoor-y for a while (see my other comment) and although he was perfectly fine, he's much happier now. It's easier now we don't live in the city though, it was only in my last place when he was really able to go out, as I was on the ground floor and we had a garden.
All the other stuff (the dead present stuff especially) is just part of being a cat owner. I let Steve deal with all that anyway :) I can deal with the odd period of worry when he doesn't come home as long as he's a happy chappy, which he is.
I like that cats can go outside when they want. Yeah they go away for a bit too long sometimes, but it is much more natural than staying in the house and getting type 2 diabetes due to lack of exercise...
Hopefully the next house will have more garden, less road, and no dogs next door. Ours don't go out enough any more.
I know what you mean, my Murphy was an indoor cat for the first 5 years of his life and I always felt a little guilty about it, even though he was fine. He's much happier now, even if he does give me the occasional sleepless, um, afternoon :)
