1. Live on the east side of Bury, where Rochdale is, and have a shorter commute but it's not a very nice area. I suspect if you want flats this is where you will need to look, but I personally wouldn't want to live there.
2. Live on the middle class west side of Bury and endure a longer commute over the bottleneck of Bury Bridge each morning. Flats on this side are fairly rare and tend to be for old people. Places like Tottington, Ramsbottoms and Seddon's Farm are all good locations, but I'm not sure how pricey they will be.
Whereabouts will you actually be working? Rochdale is a reasonably large area.
Unfortunately I need the car to get to the various sites I'll be in charge of. These will initially be outside Blackburn and Whalley bridge, followed by near Frodsham and some middle of no-where place west of the M6 A5 junction.

Have you considered living outside Rochdale and commuting in by train?
