It started when they were in their junior year in high school. He was Mr. Smarty Pants while she was Miss Popular, but because their personalities blended in with each other when they became classmates and partners, he gathered all of the courage he had, confessed and finally asked her out.
It was followed when she finally said "yes" after 2 months of courtship. With everything he had done for her and continued doing for her, all of her other suitors disappeared from her sight as soon as she felt that she had finally fallen head over heels for him.
Everything was well, even during their college days. He took up Information Technology while she took up Hotel And Restaurant Management. Even though they barely had time for each other at the university, they would always go home together, holding hands and had smiles on their faces, no matter how tiring the day was.
After 6 years of dating, he finally proposed to her. He felt like jumping off a bridge because of happiness when she said "yes", but of course, he wouldn't literally do that.
When they finally exchanged their vows at the Church where his parents got married, family members, friends and colleagues were there to witness the event that would tie them together forever.
For the first 2 years of their marriage life, nothing changed and they were still the sweet couple everyone knew, acting as if they were still in high school lovers, sneaking around the campus just for a kiss or a hug.
However, as time passed by, she noticed that he would always come home late from work. The smell of alcohol and a woman's perfume evident on his clothes. She backed off though, not wanting to start another fight and thinking that he just attended a friend's party.
It hurt her badly, seeing as it already became a habit for him and she finally found out that he had been sneaking around with some other girl.
When she confronted him, "I was stressed", was the answer she would always get from him.
"Where did the sweet man I knew and love go?" She would ask herself as she would scan through their photo albums while waiting for him to come home, tears streaming down her eyes.
One night, when he finally arrived after getting drunk with his friends, she was already fast asleep in their bedroom. However, after hearing the door open, she woke up and approached him. What happened next was something she didn't expect; he raped her. What made things worse was when he moaned someone else's name and she felt as if her heart was breaking into pieces.
A month later, she visited a doctor when she noticed that her body has made changes and she has been craving for apples and mangoes lately, at the same time, feeling nauseous every morning. When she found out that she was pregnant, she was happy, but at the same time worried.
She didn't tell him because she felt that he didn't have a right to know, even though the child was his. The bite marks and scars he left were still evident on her used-to-be-flawless skin. He didn't even apologize for what he did to her a month ago.
She didn't know what happened to him or where they went wrong, but now, all she wanted was to move on with her life and her child.
The moment he came home after talking things out with a priest when he noticed the things he would do every night, he felt renewed and was ready to go down on his knees and ask forgiveness from her. However, when he entered the house, it was empty.
He searched high and low for her, but he couldn't find her anywhere. He didn't ask her family, her friends and her colleagues, afraid that they might find out what he had been doing for the past few months of their marriage.
He blamed his boss for being such a ladies man and a heavy drinker, but he also blamed himself for tagging along with the man, even though he knew it was wrong.
After a year of searching and waiting, the mailman gave him an envelope with his name written on it and with hers on the "FROM" part. He wanted to see her, but it had no address.
When he opened the envelope, divorced papers were inside. What made it worse was that she had finally signed it and that the only thing left for him to do was to sign it as well. He cried, hard, but he cried harder, when a photo fell from the envelope and showed a photo of their child, her child, as she claimed on the letter in the back of it.
He caressed the photo with his thumb, seeing as the child had some of his features, but mostly hers. He cried as he held the papers and the photo.
He cried, because from that moment on, it was already over.
It was already too late for him.
It was already over for them.
