I finally got round to unpacking from Paris and found a Nicolas Sarkozy campaign leaflet I was given (I think they though I was French!) But I liked the way France had different values to England, shops mostly shut on Sunday, the 35 hour week etc.
I personally don't see the difference between the 35 hour and 40 hour work week... it was introduced in order to try and increase employment but all it did was end up making people who had worked 40 hours do the same job in less time. Economically France needs to change, a lot... I'm no conservative but the system works in the favor of those who have control of power - older established employees, public fonctionnaires, people who work for big businesses... but it makes it harder for young people and immigrants to find work. While I totally would love to have really low hours and really hold holidays, it's gotten to the point where it has begun to work against the country. A little bit of concession is involved - Germany recently accepted a bit of reforms here and there, and its economy started bouncing back big time
( ... )
I was in Paris at the weekend, and thats EXACTLY what i thought upon seeing the election results. Initial reaction "right, now i know precisely the percentile of assholes in france" Then " i am not coming back" Then "I hate my friend who voted blank" What are we going to do? I am ashamed of our country. :(
