Freedom is not theory, principle, or rhetoric. It’s not just an ideal, it’s not just an academic obsession of Chicago economists; it’s not fodder for bumper stickers. The sad illusion that it might be is the cost of living in a free country, distanced as we are from extreme poverty and extreme oppression. However, oppressed people know better. ( Read more... )

i am and have been a libertarian buddy, I'm financially conservative and socially liberal. i don't like obama or hilary and i don't like Guliani or whatever other loser the Reps dredge up. I'm voting libertarian. I would probably vote Rep if they hadn't sold out all of their beliefs (small government anyone?)
you gotta admit, it's pretty fucked up when we have the biggest deficit in history under a republican and the country is counting on a democrat to set the budget right. sign of the times, the best golfer is black and the most popular rapper is white.

i assume you're talking about that rational choice stuff about not voting, i think it's from Coase or someone. i can't really remember the argument for it. anyway, i waited in line, i paid my fees, i watched the stupid welcome to US citizenry video now i want my goddamn vote. this will be my first vote and i'm taking it. it's a symbolic thing. although on the whole i think i'll be more interested in voting on the local scale once i settle down someplace. someone needs to get that bitch Frankel out of office.

i don't really agree with the non voting thing. i think all educated people have a responsibility to vote. but, as much as people may dislike this, i'm not an advocate of all these "hey lets get EVERYONE to vote" campaigns. if people don't vote it's because they don't care, and the largest class of people who don't care are the ignorant ones. an ignorant vote wasted to me doesn't sound half bad.
