I don't have time to fact check this, but apparently, HRC asked trans*folk at the rally for marriage equality to take down their flags, because marriage equality isn't a trans issueBecause, you know, no trans people are gay, and no trans people are in love with people of the same gender designation as themselves, and it wouldn't be very, very handy ( Read more... )

There's a part of me that kind of sees both sides of this. The marriage issue is already so very much a hot-button for so many people, that it feels like a way to "grease the wheels" by not being super up front about what real life looks like to a lot of folks. I'm not saying that I agree with it. Not by any stretch. But I can see where (given that this really is a political issue in a lot of ways), that the politics involved might make folks think that a public trans aspect to the issue would just make it tougher.

That said, I think it's incredibly chickenshit to claim to be for equality and then say that some folks are more equal than others. A bit too Animal Farm for me.

When I was working the phones against Prop 8 in California, there was an extremely narrow 'script' that I was supposed to use when talking to people. So narrow, in fact, that after one day on the phones I left, because I knew that I could be far more persuasive left to my own devices (I'm not in sales for nothing).

I'm in such a weird place, socially and politically. I mean, simultaneously navigating Sudden Adult Onset Male Privilege (whoa, that's a weird one to wrap my head around), and becoming too damned queer to feel welcome even at the national level queer parties.

It pisses me off -- one reason I didn't change my Facebook icon.
