Neal knew he had been stubborn and downright nasty, but he hadn't been able to refrain himself. He was scared out of his mind about how his life, their life, would change forever. He didn't like not knowing what the future held for him.
Well, he did know what was in store for him from the moment David set foot again in their house - endless nights with little to no sleep, the feeling of never being good enough, the lack of intimacy. Neal shook his head. That had been the reasoning behind the big fight he and David had engaged in before his boyfriend had took off for the hospital alone, but Neal hadn't wanted to share with David his true fears and insecurities, because Neal was tough and a badass, and though David was already aware of his tender side, Neal wanted that to remain between them.
The truth was, he mused to himself as he stared at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror - all pale skin and big dark circle under his eyes - the truth was that was terrified. He was a rock star, he had finally managed to make his dreams come true, and he had found love and stability in the road up to where he stood. He wasn't afraid of all that being unbalanced by a baby stepping in his life.
Neal was frightened that he would cause grief to the baby girl David was taking home.
The key being inserted in their lock startled him. He glanced at his watch that he, for once, had remembered to wear. He let out a shaky breath - he didn't know how things stood between him and David, and he hated to leave an argument unfinished before going their separate ways. He had been dreading David coming back just as much as he had been dreading him never making it back home.
"Neal?" he heard. He sighed.
"Coming!"
He made his way back to the hall, where he could see David trying unsuccessfully to balance himself with a bag full of baby supplies and a bundle of pink clothes in his arms. Neal stopped dead in his tracks. "Dave-"
"C'mere," David whispered. He didn't motion to him because he didn't have any free hand, but Neal could hear the gesture in his boyfriend's voice. "C'mere and meet Dana."
"Dana?" Neal spluttered as he hastily walked over to his boyfriend standing in the middle of the hall. "What?"
"Meet our daughter, Dana," David repeated, with a slight trembling in his voice. Neal sped up until he reached them, his hand automatically shooting out to touch the pink blanket. "I thought you'd like the name."
"It's my-" Neal started, only to find out his voice broke. "I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry to," David whispered. The baby - Dana - tossed a little in David's arms. "Wanna hold her?"
Neal stepped back, both surprised and afraid. "I don't want to-drop her or-scare her with my tattoos-"
"Is that why-" David never finished his sentence. Instead, he placed carefully the baby in Neal's arms and waited until Neal's fingers covered Dana's tiny form to put his own hand on top of Neal's. "You're going to be a great father, Neal."
"But what if she doesn't like me?" Neal said softly, feeling the weight in his arms. "What if she decides I'm not a good father, what if I am really not a good father?"
David chuckled. When Neal looked up at him, he was snickering. Neal blushed. "Listen, Neal, the baby has been crying all the way back home, and only when I opened the door did she stop. As if she could feel you."
Dana tossed again, searching for a comfortable spot, and she seemed to find it with her tiny face stuffed in Neal's chest. The tattooed man felt a surge of warmth running through him, and he smiled up at David. "This is-"
"I know," David smiled back when Neal trailed off, squeezing his hand as the three of them stood, rocking slightly back and forth in the sweet motions of a newly found family.
