This Year, I Was Questioned About Christmas:

I was stunned that more than usual my stepdad's family was interested my own personal practices of celebrating Christmas this year.

They wanted to know exactly WHY I do not put a tree up inside my house. The answer was short and simple. I do not put a tree up inside my house and decorate it because I have two clever wire chewing, ornamet destroying ( Read more... )

This year I've been contemplating the whole traditional ceremonies of christmas. I mean, when you really boil it down, it doesn't have to be this time of year, and it really doesn't have to be done this way, or at all really. So why do we do Christmas this time of year and why? I think it's really to break up the monotony of winter so people wouldn't go crazy from it (since scientifically they figure Jesus was born in March or April anyway). I mean, any ritual, like soltice, doesn't specifically have to be done, but if you don't put importance on something then nothing is worth it, really. Life would just be life and that would be it, and we'd all get really bored and listless and anxious.

I think I'm babbling (yay cold). But really, that's why it's really the thought that counts :) Yay parties, and stuff :3

Thanks allot. Slava and I have had this discussion annually around holiday season since our son's birth. Neither of us, unfortunately, could seem to reach a common ground between our differeing beliefs (spiritual, pagan, and wiccan). Much less, a common ground between our extended families various beliefs (baptist, catholic, jewish, and metaphysical). Your comment gave us great and different ideas and a new perspective on a stale-mated discussion. We have since come to an agreement. This is a huge start, and big step from where we were at this year alone. Now, onto deciding how to implement it and celebrate our own tradition annually. Again, thanks very much.
