Honey... be you. You can not "fill the other shoes" of the old teacher, you can only fill your own. The first day, go over your ground rules, and what YOUR expectations are, and what you are willing and not willing to do... Building a sense of community and trust will take a little while, especially with this new age group and the situation you're stepping into. They're smart kids... they will figure it out pretty quick.

This!
I was lucky, in that I was starting a new program entirely, so I was very free to set things up without as many preconceived notions. That said, it was still a fine arts program, so both kids and parents took some convincing that this was not just going to be a cakewalk.
But, you know what you're doing, and they will figure that out-- even if you are doing it differently than they were used to.

I miss my kids. Miss 'em a lot. And am somewhat envious of your back-to-school excitement. :)

Remember, you can always get easier as the year goes on, it is nigh impossible to get tougher.

What do you mean he "pulled them out of their core classes"?

AS to the nerves, it's not nervousness, it's excitement about the great year you are going to have!

Her's a blessing/prayer from a Rabbi friend of mine that fits with the coming school year (he had to translate the original Hebrew in his post for me):

"May it be Your will, O L-rd our G-d, that our lot should be one of love, brotherhood, peace, and friendship. May You make our territory should be filled with students; and that our end should be successful, so that at the end we should indeed see the things we hoped for all our lives. May You set our portion in Gan Eden (Garden of Eden, Paradise), ... Read Moreand set us aright with good friends and the good inclination in Your world. And may we get up in the morning and find our hearts yearning to awe Your name, and may our wants and desires come before You for the good.
Berachos 16b"
